Works great at preventing our family drivers from pulling too far up in the garage. We had an ancient plastic parking guard in place for years but my daughter repeatedly knocked it down and ran it over. This one's great because it hangs from the ceiling. Just make sure your windshield wipers are off as you enter your garage or carport or they may send it airborne- as we found out the hard way!

I ordered two of these - one for each side of a double sectional door for each of the vehicles using that door. The first package I opened had three screw-in eyelets, the ball which is attached with a long string, and installation instructions. The second package (box) was missing the three eyelets - one reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating as wells as the fact that the instruction measurements didn't apply in my application. Had I not had an assortment of screw-in eyelets I would've been unable to install the second ball. Hardware costs less than a dollar - but inconvenience factor - high.Nevertheless I was able to install both balls to fall precisely in the spot I wanted so that the vehicles are not only placed the distance from the front garage wall that I wanted - but laterally spaced when using the ball as an aiming point for specific spots on the vehicle dashes - a speaker on one of the vehicles and a seam in the dash on the other.A spring clamp is a good tool for holding the string to the eyelets before tying off the string on the eyelet that's attached to the garage door. Placement of the middle eyelet is critical the instructions told me to place it 90 inches from the back garage wall. That was incorrect - it was approximately 8" too far out from the back wall. Using that measurement - with the ball at the correct height - when the door closed the string would be too short. I stopped the garage door about 8" from closing and the ball was touching the ceiling. Why I used a clamp to hold the string at the garage door eyelet rather than tying it off. My middle eyelet needed to be about 8" to the rear of the top edge of the door when the door was open (about 82" from the back wall) - that makes the string longer and allows space between the ball and the ceiling when the door is closed.TO INSTALL: I recommend measuring how far from the front garage wall the ball needs to be then installing the eyelet over the ball first - then installing the eyelet on the top of the garage door with the door open. Next close the door. Temporarily run the string through the first eyelet and attach the string to the garage door eyelet - wrapping it around the eyelet and clamping it - the actual height of the ball at this time isn't critical as this determines a straight line for all three eyelets.. The middle eyelet will be placed right above the string. You can open the eyelet slightly, which allows the string to be slid in it after it's attached to the ceiling or just rethread through that eyelet after removing the string from the garage door. (I used long nose pliers to open the eyelet to avoid having to reconnect to the garage door eyelet.) In my application the eyelet was place 8" rearward of the forward edge of the door when it was opened. Your's may vary. (I had extra eyelets - so on the misplacement, based on the instructions, of the first one I just added an extra eyelet.) Close the door to place that middle eyelet - as when it's open the door is in the way. Slide the string inside the eyelet that you just installed. Loosen the clamp at the door eyelet and adjust for the correct height of the ball. Then clamp it back at the door eyelet. Close the door - but be prepared to stop it if the ball reaches the top of the ceiling before the door is fully closed. Make any final adjustment to the length of the string and finally cut it to the correct length and tie it to the door eyelet.It's a time consuming installation - so if you don't mind the ball always hanging down - you can just hang it from the first eyelet. I am easily pleased and just enjoy watching the balls rise as the door opens - so the installation process was worth the effort for me.

I noticed quite a bit of confusion and conflicting information on this parking ball, so I went ahead and made a video showing how it works, and how to install it. Very simple, took about 10 minutes.It does indeed auto retract when installed correctly.Too many people don’t seem to understand the instructions, and instead install it their own way, then claim it doesn’t work correctly. I figured a video will help alleviate some of that and help others with weather this is the one for them.This is my third one, and they hold up for years of daily use with no problems. I have more garages now, so I needed another.First thing is it is soft, but has just enough bounce that at low speed it’s obvious when it contacts the windshield, and you can easily park in the exact same spot every time.I really enjoy the idea of it being able to retract out of my way if I want to use my garage for anything other than parking my car in. It’s amazingly handy when I want to tinker on projects and don’t want the ball hanging in the center of the room. If I want airflow, open the garage about half way and it’s still above my head.It’s soft (does not leave marks on the windshield), the string doesn’t stretch over time, and it comes with everything you need to install.10/10, and for $7 it’s hard to beat.

Don't do this, just get something that mounts to the floor. Here's why: the thing is that you will attach two eyelets to your ceiling and one to your garage door. The idea is that when you open the door, the ball lowers from the ceiling. Then you park and when you close the door the ball goes back up. Awesome, right? No. See the problem is that the three eyelets make a triangle, so what you wind up with is the string moving through three points, making a sine wave type of pattern. So, when you open the door, the ball goes down below where your car is when parked, then back up. Same with when you park -- the ball hangs at a level where commit contacts the window. Then you get out, close the door and it dips down below the windows bumping your car before going back up. Not ideal. But...one day I got out of the car and closed the garage door while I got out of the car. The ball dipped down below the level of the window and got caught in my convertible soft top. I couldn't stop the garage in time and the thing ripped my soft top! Even if I did not have convertible, this could damage the weather strip of your car very easily, and the ball goes down when opening bumping your car awkwardly. I think this is a flawed solution, just hang it so that it doesn't go up and down, or even better, get one of those floor-mounted stops like I had for years without issue before this one.

This thing is cool. I actually bought it to use in a slightly unconventional way. Instead of using it to gauge how far I had pulled into my garage, I positioned it right at the rear wheel arch so I could see in my side mirror that I was backing in at the right angle. It was important for my garage because there is a side door that opens inward and I needed to give clearance. With this ball in place, it’s highly visible in the side mirror and it makes backing in a consistent breeze. Plus, it’s cool watching the ball rise up out of the way when the garage door closes.

If you follow the instructions to a T, works really well. But you have to tailor the installation to your garage and that can get complicated. Once you've worked it all out though, is great. Works perfectly for parking and when the door is lowered again the ball retracts back to the top of the garage. Would recommend to anyone but you could just go buy string and a ball and some eyelets for half this price. For the price ($6+) you're basically paying not to have to go to the store for the parts. It's a simple device. Took me 15mins to install once I had the planning worked out to properly distance the eyelets and keep everything in a straight line on the ceiling.

This has made my life better. This saved my garage, my wife’s car, my marriage. Ok maybe not the last one but setting this up was easy and it allows us to park just right in the garage. I love that it retracts into the ceiling when the door is closed allowing me to freely work in the garage when the car is out.

Product is what it says it is. But not easy to set up. Confusing. We modified and it worked for us.

Product arrived on time, was installed with no problems and does its job as described.

So I tried to mount it as per the instructions. The first issue I had was the eyelet I mounted in the garage door. I pre drilled and used pliers to twist they eyelet in, but the eyelet broke off (they are pretty cheap). The second issue was I mounted everything as per the measurements , but wen I lowered the garage door, the ball named at the eyelet with about 8” of garage door left to close. This meant it pulled and bent the eyelet. I double checked the measurements and they were bang on. I do a lot of renos and used my laser measure, but checked it with a steel tape measure, too. Ended up moving the middle eye about 16” to make it work properly. It does work and works well, but not with the instructions provided. Others have noted trial and error and you should plant to expect that. I also replaced all the eyelets with better ones. The ones supplied are cheap and have very little thread to bight into the drywall ceiling. Need to be handy to make this work. I like it, but good grief.
