This shrub is known to be one of the best for a red autumnal
colour. It is native to central US where it is often grown on
roadsides to add vibrancy. It is thick with brittle branches and
the younger branches are covered with velvety, purple hairs that
tend to grow sideways. It looks great planted in shrub borders or
on its own in the lawn. The hairy, decorative composite leaves
grow in large numbers and are surrounded by panicles of tiny
yellow flowers. The female flowers produce showy pyramidal
fruiting clusters with each cluster containing several
berry-like, hairy drupes which by autumn ripen and are a bright
red gradually turning darker as they persist throughout most of
