Detailed Look at This Atrocity
This is the best coverage of the 1863 Lawrence Massacre that I have ever found to date. Goodrich does an excellent job in thoroughly covering the atrocity perpetrated by Quantrill and his raiders under the Black Flag. Imagine 200 men and boys slaughtered. Even in today's world, those would be headlines in every paper.Quantrill is a fascinating subject on many levels. He was clearly a leader, a good military strategist, courageous and crafty. He was also a liar, who was ruthless, brutal and deadly. In conducting this raid on Lawrence he was daring beyond any Union expectations.Goodrich covers the event from beginning to end in such a dramatic and interesting style that you will not be able to put the book down. I got to know many of the victims. The book is so informative that genealogists, historians and the curious will find many veins for further exploration and inquiry. Goodrich will make you believe that you were an eyewitness that day in Lawrence.

Good Story but disjointed.
Good facts, interesting story but rather disjointed. reads exactly like a History book, if you're interested in that. I enjoyed the history lesson but found that the author jumped around a bit. He would discuss the beginnings of a raid and the characters involved and then digress to talk about the character he mentioned. difficult read sometimes.

Traumatic.
I love this book for its thoroughness but it was hands-down one of the most disturbing things I've ever read. You've been warned. It's a must-read, though, if you're interested in the Civil War in the west (the "west" of the 1860's, at least) and border conflicts.

Well done
This book gives a good account of the history behind the Kansas/Missouri border wars and a great account of the attack on Lawrence. A good mix of history, the characters involved and the tragedy at Lawrence. Where some books tend to favor the north or south in Civil War era history... this book is shows the evils and reasoning of both sides without trying to glorify the acts on either side. Well documented and straight forward. A good book. If you have an interest in American history... this is a book you should certainly enjoy. I did.

Death stalks all so needlessly at the darkest daybreak in Lawrence, Kansas history.
A very thorough account of an absolutely horrific event that took place in Lawrence, Kansas history. It leaves me totally astounded that a town supplied with Sharpe rifles would stand defenseless against Quantrill's drunken raiders. The author did an excellent job of turning words to pictures that played out in my mind. May read this book again as I live in Lawrence and wish to retrace the events and locations where they occurred.

Educational
I live in Lawrence, and have been wanting to learn more about Lawrence history. I had a hard time putting this book down. It is graphic and to the point, so not for the weak of heart. It was a true horror story, yet I enjoyed learning about early Lawrence. The maps were interesting as well.
