Paul McCartney

great read - Paul is far from just a pretty face. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Always loved the Beatles, but have a deep and newfound appreciation for Paul McCartney the person, the musician, the arranger. It was his impetus that kept the Beatles going as long as they did, and his individual career shows his true love of music, his creativity and his humanity.

Pathetic, actually
Given that this is the closest we're going to get to an authorized, official biography, it's mostly skim country, of little interest. It gives a fairly earnest and tame version of the Lennon/McCartney relationship, nothing new here. You can just see George sitting on the sidelines of this whole affair seething, having begun to withdraw from collaborative work around Pepper, returning with material superior to either of the others at the end. There's lots of info but little real insight into McCartney's character and psyche - lots of details about his father's music hall roots and the Asher family but if you're interested in the making of the music, or a depth study into what makes him tick, go somewhere else. The endless chapters on Klein/Eastman management, post-Beatles dynamics (and the abysmal financial treatment of Wings musicians) and the whole last quarter of the book is Heather Mills in court. I love the Beatles and admire McCartney as a composer and musician - and the master of modern rock bass playing - but this book is just boring.

Well-informed and balanced. The tone is sympathetic, yet the book also shows the more human side of seemingly smooth success machine. Beside Mark Lewisohn, Norman is the most crafty living Beatles scholar.

Mythical to its best
The Beatles is a myth that modern generation can hardly can truly capture in its original colors, only listen to their music through streaming services. Yet the profuse song-writing of Paul enabled these records to keep their meaning even today.

The Insightful Story of a Wonderful Musician and Song-writer
Whilst I loved this book and found it fascinating, it is not without it's drawbacks. I read Philip Norman's biography of John Lennon a few years back and this makes a great companion to that volume. I think Norman, delves fairly into the McCartney story to reveal an incredibly creative individual who has made an enormous impact on the music world over the past sixty years. In some ways I prefer the Lennon biography but that is probably more to do with the fact that Lennon was a more complicated individual.Three things I didn't like about this book. Firstly the inordinate amount of time spent at the beginning where the author attempted to justify why he could write this biography. Clearly he felt he had to overcome perceptions of his past antipathy (real or imagined) towards McCartney. Who cares? Put that in a footnote somewhere, the interest in the volume is McCartney, not the author. Secondly, the whole Heather Mills section of the book really becomes a Heather Mills biography rather than about McCartney. I thought the author got a bit off track there. And my final criticism would be the same of almost all such Rock Musician biographies. McCartney's claim to fame is as an incredible musician and song-writer, yet this is really a book about the person. As a muso myself I would be much more interested in greater attention and analysis given to the musical output that McCartney has given us rather than his relationship sagas. But that is the world we live in, and I can accept that having a greater appreciation of the person, increases our appreciation of the music too.All in all, well worth the read.

Biographie Philip Norman : Paul McCartney
Bonjour.
