Re bought this after I lost my original copy. Took some time to track it down, but I'm glad I got it. Ahhh memories of playing BG for the first time.

It's very weird. Some characters from the game got changed pretty much entirely and in a bad way. Hard to stand Jaheira's voice when done by the actor :D

A terrible adaption
The `Baldur's Gate' computer game is easily my all-time favourite game with a nice plot, interesting characters and a nice sense of humour, this novelization has none of that. The story follows the mercenary Abdel who, after the death of his foster father Gorion, is drawn into the intrigues of the Sword Coast as a mysterious organization tries to start a war between Baldur's Gate and Amn. Along the way Abdel must fight against monsters, doppelgangers and his own nature while making discoveries about his own origins. The `Baldur's Gate' game had an interesting plot that drew you in but here the plot has been condensed down considerably with much of the focus on the early and middle stages of the story leaving the ending with a rather rushed and unsatisfying feeling. Also, the book also removes much of the humour from the game in exchange for more gore and somewhat lacklustre action. Add to this the fact that the main character isn't all that likable and a romance plot that appears to have been added for no other reason than to have a romance plot, it means that the book leaves much to be desired. The game also had around than twenty-six characters who could join your party and while it is understandable that they had to cut this number down considerably, the fact that the five characters who do make it into the book are changed so much is somewhat annoying. Montaron and Xzar suffer the least from this but they don't last all that long and Yeslick only appears in a single chapter. Xar on the other hand seems to be far less pessimistic than in the games and seems to have lost his magical abilities in favour of the skills of the Fight/Thief of Coren. Khalid seems to have lost his stutter and become a bit of a jerk while his marriage with Jaheira is on the rocks somewhat. Jaheira herself suffers terribly as well going from a strong Fighter/Druid to someone whose only role is to act as a motivation for the main character.I am sure that if this book wasn't a novelization of a brilliant and well-loved game it would be considered merely average rather than terrible and as such I will give it two stars.

A fantasy adventure novel with no fantasy. Or adventure...
Imagine Dungeons & Dragons without magic. Now imagine Forgotten Realms without adventure. Finally, imagine Baldur's Gate (the PC game) without its plot, humour and any of its interesting (and likeable) characters. Ta-daa!! Now you've got Baldur's Gate the novel! And what a crummy novel it is: I can't think of a good thing to say about it. Avoid at all costs.

Quite good althrough maybe a little more devlopement
I throught the book was excellant althrough I think there could have been a few more charcters from the game. At the end as well I think there should have been more to it. But otherwise it was a good read.

This is sad.
This is a sad, sad excuse for a book. I love Baldur's Gate, and I poorly assumed that a book based on it would be quite interesting. I have read both Halo books and the Brute Force book and loved them. I, naturally, expected a good book. Well, I got a good book. But it is an insult to Forgotten Realms. I am angry that anyone could take a game and ruin it, i.e., make a crummy movie, Super Mario Bros., or make a terrible book, Baldur's Gate. GRRR!

Five Stars
As a writer who is about to complete a similar novel, I found this series very entertaining.

A pleasant read
First of all: I'm a true fanatic about the game, playing it since 13 years straight, never lost the enthusiasm about it.The story was pretty good in my opinion, I couldn't stop reading - except I had to make pauses, because the book seemed to have mould or something like that - made me cough pretty much times. In conclusion:A for the storyC- for the condition(no damage, but mould)

Awesome Book
If you love the R.A. Salvatore books than read this. Its not by him but I got into this book almost as much as I did his other books.

not as bad as ppl say
this book doesn't deserve all the crap reviews it gets. First of all it was written before the game ever came out , second it is not the same plot if you expect it to follow the game then it will disappoint you. That being said it isn't a bad book at all and Athans isn't a terrible writer , the book is a good quick read and a lot of fun. If you like fantasy and not expecting an epic tale it's a fun adventure. I repeat it's not the same plot as the game which is why I'm assuming it's got so many bad reviews. It's not a bad book at all..
