The Fantod Pack by Edward Gorey

Fantod Tarot is delightful!
Love this little deck of cards! Comes with a little white book, and a really nice 2 piece box. The cards have a shiney finish. I collect tarot cards but I still appreciate poking fun at the concept of being able to foretell the future with them. This deck does that! The cards are so funny! They make a great addition to my collection and I would definitely gift them to someone who is interested in tarot cards but still possesses a sense of humor. I think I'd like to get a book of illustrations done by Edward Gorey. Genius!

Surprisingly accurate for reading
Got this as a gift for myself as a cheer-me-up for some blues I was experiencing. The deck is unusual and funny. The cards are glossy, so they can be a bit shiny depending on the lighting, but I donโt find this to be too big of a problem. Iโm a professional tarot reader and do free live readings on Facebook. On a whim I used this deck and was surprised how well it resonated with participants of the live reading event. Full disclosure, if you are using the deck with any amount of seriousness, youโll have to engage with high levels of intuitive interpretation. The book simply provides a list of key words, many of which are archaic and will require the use of a dictionary. But once you get to the core emotion, energy or function of what the card and key words are trying to express, youโll find them quite applicable to many usual questions. That said, I would like to continue using them only as a novelty for promoting my business or entertaining friends.

strangely comforting, as can be expected of gorey creations
i love this pack because it helps me realize when i'm catastrophizing a situation. i'm a regular user of traditional tarot, and have recently started exploring other varieties of deck; this one is surprisingly useful as a therapeuric tool when i'm feeling pessimistic, because i can pick any card as a "what's really the worst that could happen?" and i instantly feel better about the situation in question. because like, on the one hand there ARE outcomes like Horrendous Fits or similar, which doesn't sound too great, but i can't continue to take myself too seriously if the worst that could happen is like, Crumbs. or Disarray. this deck delivers on that front! the only difficulty is that it's very slickly laminated card stock, with edges so crisp and corners so sharp that you can't really shuffle the deck. i suppose this encourages the reader to do what's recommended by the enclosed booklet, which is to hurl the cards around the room.

A great novelty from a well respected and loved artist. ๐
I'm a card reader and these cards add so much more flavor to my reading. The guidebook is very cryptic and morbid lol ๐ I love it. We get the extreme reversed definition of the cards and I love the month and day of the week assignment ๐๐

Perfect for divination by a reader who's a little off center!
These cards, if taken seriously, could give you nightmares ... fortunately, they're so obviously a Tarot spoof that they're simply hysterically funny! Predictions of such conditions as creeping sickness, fugues, and scales make us almost happy just to have arthritis or a head cold. The cards themselves are very well made, laminated in plastic to last pretty much forever. The box is an extra (and pleasant) surprise--it's high quality, the top and bottom fit together perfectly, and the surface feels elegant in the hand. For what you get, the price is ridiculously low! I've been a Fantod fan since the 1960s, when our family discovered the Esquire rendition, including the cards to paste on backing and cut out as well as the full introduction and meanings for the cards. My brother, in a fit of mischievously macabre creativity, made up an additional card for the pack (one which I have reproduced for my new set) called "The Hole" -- it depicts an ominous hole in the ground with crumbs of earth around the edge. The meaning of this card is whatever it evokes in the person viewing the card. If you appreciate the odd, absurd, and unsettling, Fantod is the pack for you! If you have a working knowledge of Tarot, all the better!!

Pithy and Dark, but Never Bitter
With the Fantod Pack, Gorey introduces hithertofore undiscovered archetypes into the universal consciousness. It is a short story in box format. It is his autobiography, the distillation of the wisdom gained through his ghoulish ouvre. It is Gordy's gift to us, that we should not fear the night inside ourselves.

A beautiful little set with a great box and a good ...
A beautiful little set with a great box and a good feel. The gloss makes them faintly grip on your fingers like they don't want you to let go, which is a small but amusing detail. As others have said, these aren't particularly useful for dedicated reading or divination. Too many highly unrelated words per card. Taking the book and cards as largely unrelated makes each its own sublime joke.If you are determined to do readings with them however, I'd recommend ignoring the book outright and just going by what the card feels like to you in relation to the subject. Perhaps The Child is warning of a foolish mistake. Perhaps The Limb is a harbinger of betrayal by a trusted colleague. The sky's the limit when the symbols don't have a basis. That said, The Black Doll has a stupendously eerie and simple meaning that I intend to use as-is: what you most fear, is drawing near...

Step aside Crystal Ball !!
I like Gorey and Ive been aware of the Fantold deck for awhile , my favorite card is the Waltzing Mouse , just something about that image that is totally giggle worthy and the predictions are all so elegantly encapsulated with arcane adjectives and droll phrases each denoting some grim fate,"a forged snapshot"A Forged Snapshot ????Why me ?? WHY ME ????The deck and the box they come in are well made and though I dont believe in occult crappola I still find myself on edge with the threat of a bรชtise forever hanging over my head. A bรชtise ?? Thats all I need ! Why doncha just give me the Kiss Of Death and be done with it already !!
