Clear Banister Guard

I purchase an 8-section gate/fence to enclose a small area for our new puppy. The gate/fence was perfect. It spanned 16 feet. I purchased the fence for our new miniature pinscher puppy. He came home at only 2 pounds, so we needed to do something about the bar spacing on the gate and fence panels (they were 2-1/2 inches apart). We purchased this clear banister guard. The guard was 15 feet long and turned out to be just the right size for the fence with enough to make 9 panels if needed. I cut the guard into 21” x 26-1/2” panels (17” x 24-1/2” for the gate section) and attached them to the fence using the zip ties that came with the guard (had to purchase additional because I didn’t position them correctly the first time). I attached the cut pieces of the guard to the outside of each fence section. A hole punch was included with the guard which made assembly very easy. I attached a horizontal placed zip tie at each corner of the guard and around the end post of each fence. I then attached zip ties from each corner to the fence top and bottom rails, attaching an additional zip tie in the center of the guard to the top rail. It worked perfect. I had no issue completing this project all by myself. The plastic guard is very tough and did not have any breakage when pulling the zip ties were pulled tight. It worked perfect and you can't even tell that the guard is on. Perfect gate/fence and now there will be no escaping puppy.

I have installed this type of banister guard in three houses now. I love it. I love that you can't see it from a distance compared to the mesh designs, I love that kids still can't throw things through holes because it's a complete barrier, I love that it wipes clean very easily, and I love that I can install a 15 foot section of it in about 25 minutes. I have always kept the install very easy. I just punch holes with the hole punch that comes with it and zip tie it every foot or two at the top and bottom. I have done all installs on my own. As long as you are patient and work a few feet at a time and snug up each zip tie adjusting the position on the bannister as you go, you can install it fine on your own. The only annoyance is that it can be loud if a kid hits it, but then you tell the kid to knock it off. I also think it's pretty reasonably priced for how great it is. I even installed it in a vacation house that had a pool table on an upper level, and you couldn't even tell it was there, but at least pool balls weren't dropping on our heads anymore! I've had this installed for years and it holds up well.

I think this would be relatively simple to install on a straight/level railing w/spindles. However, I needed it to block the spindles on my STAIRCASE which is obviously on an angle. For some reason, it didn't occur to me when I ordered it that I couldn't simply 'tilt' it and expect it to fit my angled staircase. Upon receipt, it was clear that it was going to require more than just me to install it. It is definitely a two-person job! Since I live alone, I was afraid that I was going to have no choice but have a glass company come out to measure & have a piece of plexiglass custom cut & installed, which would have obviously been much more expensive (or hire a handyman; hard to find a good, reliable, affordable one ... but I digress). Ultimately, after it sitting for almost 18 months, I finally had a handy & helpful family member come over and help me install it. First, the plastic is thick and a bit heavy, and since it comes in a roll it wants to curl back on itself during installation. Second, forget about using the hole punch that comes with it unless you don't need to punch many holes and those holes will be very near the edges of the plastic -- basically, what they provide is a very cheap hole punch that a child would use to cut craft paper. What works perfectly is an AWL ... the added benefit to using an awl is that it creates a smooth, almost rounded surface vs. a sharp edge, and of course you can make the holes anywhere you want in the plastic (we made holes mid-way down in the middle of the plastic and never could have done that w/the punch provided). To install on my staircase, we cut the plastic to slightly wider than needed. Then, we each held one end of the plastic and lined it up to the bottom of the wood stair rail/cap. Here's where a THIRD set of hands would come in handy, if you don't have a clamp to hold it in place like we did. Then, we put down a piece of scrap cardboard on the base of the staircase to protect the wood, then cut the plastic in a horizontal line to the exact height/angle we needed so that the spindles were covered from top to bottom. After that, with both ends then clamped, we determined the best placement for the ties and made the holes with the awl. Once it was secured on the top, because I did not want to put any holes in either my wood railing/post or my wall, we wrapped the plastic around the end (spindle on one end and post on the other) and then secured those with ties after using the awl to go thru both layers of the plastic so that both ends were wrapped and no hard edges were exposed. I would add a photo so that this would be a bit easier to visualize, but I am not sure how (there is no reference to photos on this review page).

This stuff really works! We put it around a banister/balcony area on our second floor that overlooks the great room. The banister wraps around on 2 sides of the room. Our balustrades are white wood spindles placed far enough apart that a toddler could easily slip through and fall. I had our handyman install it. He was skeptical at first, but after he got the project going and completed we were all very happy with the outcome. It was easy (not a 2 person job if you hire a handy man or are handy yourself) and we tied the ties to every other spindle and then tacked the ends to the wall or beams and put a wooden strip of the end to make it look neat and finished. The plastic is thick and durable. It was easy to cut as we had to trim off about an 1" at the bottom to fit it in. This makes our entire 2nd floor baby proof now. It's a life saver - literally! DO NOT hesitate to use this as a solution for upper levels. It is virtually invisible until maybe a light hits it then you can see a reflection, but no one even notices it until I mention it. It's cleanable for little finger prints. It was the perfect solution for us.

This banister guard is awesome. I not only use them for guardrails, I use them to line my dog kennels for winter. When I saw that it could be used outdoors, I immediately thought of the kennels. I overlap them a little and zip tie them to the outside of the heavy gauge bars. It makes an immediate difference in temperature and cuts the wind while still having air flow at the seams. They have lasted through about 3 seasons on average. I leave most of them on year-round, only taking a few off for better ventilation in the summer months so the summer storms don't soak the interior. They eventually get a little foggy, but the animals don't care. Then I replace a few of them at a time as needed. The plastic sheets are a great heavy-duty product, and it saved me allot of money. Especially when I was considering Plexi-glass panels. Love this product.

You know what they say, “Dogs live for you and cats live with you.” Yes, this is marketed for child safety but like most people here, I bought this for my cats (soul suckers/lifelines). This is not our forever home so we didn’t want to change the whole railing/stairs. My middle girl was always sticking her head between the rails and now that we have a new kitten, this cat mom couldn’t have any peace of mind. Ordered this with high hopes because I refused to let our new kitten out of a bedroom until we set it up. Ordered 15 feet as we only wanted to do the banister and felt confident that the girls would not be crazy on the stairs itself. Plastic is hard but malleable. Arrives with hole puncher, screws and zip ties. Length was perfect however the width was a bit too wide (approximately 2.5inches too long). Of course husband and I had daggers for each other trying to shorten the width across 15 feet but all was resolved with many huffs, puffs, and cats walking all over the plastic. In the end, yes this is an excellent product. It’s a 2 man job in terms of one holds the plastic and the other one zips it to the posts. Took us about 1.5 hours but this accounted for the cutting down the width. My only suggestion would be to offer a second width option as I feel our staircase is standard. Cat on!

We purchased three of these banister guards for the banister surrounding the tiled stairway our split-level home. We had hoped these would be pretty inconspicuous, but we could tell pretty quickly upon opening one up that they weren't going to be very attractive. For one, they're not totally clear. Secondly, they reflect light. Thirdly... they're just big sheets of plastic (obviously) - but somehow we imagined that it would look nicer. Nope, they look like a big sheet of plastic. Plus, installation is a bit weird. It involves using a super chintzy hole-punch and zip ties (plus screws, for the end posts against the wall.) Zip ties also aren't great looking. So, we ended up returning these and simply sewing a fabric banister guard that ended up being much cheaper and much more attractive (and it didn't take very long at all.) Because, if you think about it, all you need is a rectangular piece of very sturdy fabric, well attached to the banister. (Though I take NO responsibility for that last statement, proceed at your own risk! A fabric banister guard could be a death trap, what do I know; it just seems to have worked for us.) So, these weren't right for us, but they would probably work well to keep your banister safe - you just may not end up liking how they look.

Easy to fit, baby has been safely contained. Really unobtrusive looking, barely noticable really and will be very easy to remove with no damage left behing. Super pleased with it and would buy again if I move house. Once fitted it does make quite an impressive bang and whamp/wobble sound when hit to the delight of the baby and nobody else.

Worked great, very difficult to put on need for sure two people, but now that it's on love it 😍

Wonderful. Plastic sheet guard is strong and a good thickness but still easy to work with and easy to cut with a box cutter. Recommend getting black zip ties for a dark brown banister to make it even more invisible when installed. A bit of learning curve to get it all aligned. Hole puncher was easy to use. Have to be careful not to bend the plastic guard else might leave a white bend mark. Looks totally invisible in some lighting conditions. Very satisfied.
