This is an excellent book
I use this and the one for Spanish. I use Practice Makes Perfect complete, with verbs, with grammar, this book that is the subject of the review, and a dictionary. 501 French Verbs gives you the most powerful verbs you must know plus verb expressions and synonyms and antonyms. French is more difficult to pronounce for beginners because if you learn Spanish there are Spanish language television programs all around, but we tend not to hear French as much in the USA.

New Improved Version
This is an excellent reference book. Its large pages are laid out clearly. I appreciate the section of expressions at the bottom of each page. However, I don't see the need for one of the appendix entries: "Defective and Impersonal Verbs." The verbs in this appendix entry (among them s'agir, coûter, se passer, sembler, and the all-important FALLOIR ) should be included the main body of the book, not listed in a separate section. I wrote a note in the book's index that the verb "falloir" appears on page 629, because the index did not indicate that this verb appears in the book at all; I found it by chance..

Excellent book for reference and study
This reference book is well thought out and easy to navigate.I especially like the list of 55 essential verbs. These verbs are clearly flagged as they appear in the overall alphabetical verb listing. Each verb comes with sample sentences and idiomatic expressions built with the verb, even proverbs using the verb. You can learn a lot just by concentrating on these pages.I find it easier to study verb conjugations in this book than on an online dictionary. There's no interference from pop-up ads.And yet I do need the online dictionary, too. 501 verbs are only the basics. French is full of colorful expressive verbs that keep showing up in the books I try to read. And they're not all in this book.I can't comment on the CD-ROM, because I'll probably never use it. It's the book that attracted me. I consult it every time I find myself devoting an hour or so to studying French. There's also a lot of helpful grammar relating to verbs.

Not for beginners
For the level I am, this is difficult to use. I believe I will hit a point where I love it, but right now it's frustrating. It is comprehensive and I think would be great combined with a class. There is an English to French index, but the majority of the book assumes you know the French verb. It is detailed in the conjugations and so a great resource.

Invaluable for beginner-intermediate learners
The first 30 pages of grammar and explanations of tenses is better and far more concise than any textbook I've used, and the 500 verbs with all tenses and conjugations is just great.
