Abstinence only nonsense, and out of date in general
This terrible "Health" textbook from the Pearson textbook racket scheme features the abstinence only approach for sex education, a backwards medieval and puritan approach rooted in ignorance and reality denial, that has found to be extremely ineffective in multiple studies, for example:"Adolescents who received comprehensive sex education were significantly less likely to report teen pregnancy than those who received no formal sex education, whereas there was no significant effect of abstinence-only education. Abstinence-only education did not reduce the likelihood of engaging in vaginal intercourse, but comprehensive sex education was marginally associated with a lower likelihood of reporting having engaged in vaginal intercourse" - Journal of Adolescent Health 42 (2008) 344โ351Aside from that, the book is generally of terrible quality. It seems to have been written in the 1990s before the internet was a major feature of teenagers' social lives, has terrible advice about how to "say no" to drugs without inviting ridicule. Aside from lacking any information on contraceptives, it also has very out of date information about drugs (does not mention or address the fact that Marijuana is now legal in many states, which is certainly relevant to the ability of teenagers to obtain it. It is missing any information about social media even though this is central to teenagers lives and a source of bullying. Typical Pearson scam of updating the edition to 2014 by shuffling a few pages around without seriously updating it since the 1990s.
