What a Fantast—I mean Terrific Set of Tales!
Though generally flying under the radar when it was released The Terrifics is a great riff on what made Marvel’s Fantastic Four so popular (when it was good). Don’t get me wrong, this is not a cut and paste duplication of 5hat Marvel book, rather this is a healthy homage to scientific adventure books of the Silver Age with a health dose of FF in its DNA and a modern take on adventure storytelling. Each story leaves more fascinating and brilliant concepts in the margins than most books can fit into a single issue. This volume is where Gene Luen Yang (New Super-Man) takes the scripting reigns and he doesn’t up on the pace set by his predecessor.Does that mean this is a good jumping on point. Yes. You may lose some of the emotional resonance between characters if you haven’t read the previous volumes, but there is enough to get you up to speed. So if you like multiverse-hopping, mad misadventures, and high science concepts with a dash of personal stakes then 5his is the book for you. Buy it, enjoy it, and have aTerrific time.

Chuck Austen? Is that you? ;-)
When I ordered the trade paperback I did not see that a new writer had taken over. My bad! But a few pages into the story I was reminded of that fact with a vengeance. It became obvious pretty fast that the new writer had not taken even five minutes to browse through the work of his predecessor. Complete character assassination across the whole story. Problems between characters long solved suddenly became storypoints again. But this kind of behavior can be seen very often these days when a new writer takes over. (I'm looking at you Bendis!) Which brings me to the titel of this review. Chuck Austen was well known for character assassinations whenever he took over a book. And for a moment I thought I was reading a book by him. Very irritating! My recomedation? Buy the first two trades and enjoy ! This ting? Just ignore it!
