Lights, Camera . . . Zombies! (12) (Hardy Boys: The Secret Files)

Casting A Refreshing Light
The Hardy Boys genre has been written since the 1920's. There are hundreds of stories with different authors, different styles, different time frames.I've two favorite sets - the originals through the 1940's, and the Secret Files beginning 2010, including the latest title reviewed here, "Lights, Camera . . . Zombies!"Although The Hardy Boys began as teenage brothers Frank and Joe, in the current series they are about ten years younger. Yet their friendliness, intelligence, and dedication are identical. These shorter length tales featuring plenty of nicely drawn pictures are intended for a younger set of readers, yet older folks can thoroughly enjoy the pleasure of flipping through these handsomely produced volumes. The Zombies scenario involves a movie being filmed in the the boys' community. They hope to be cast as extras. A movie extra myself in 1980, I found this book depicting the excitement and intrigue of what is occurring on and off the set, and distinguishing between what is real and staged to be quite authentic and engaging. It's a superb treat knowing that both the participants in the novel and its readers will learn a lesson about right and wrong conduct. In today's world of deception and violence, the Hardy Boys cast (pun intended) a refreshing light.

... series because the vocabulary and story context has been perfect for my 8 year old child
I have been a big fan of this series because the vocabulary and story context has been perfect for my 8 year old child. We have read seven other books in this series so far where the vocab choice has been at a slightly moderate difficulty level with a respectable lexile score. This particular book's vocab was frustratingly beyond that, while the story and its connotations were set for that of a tween. I'm really glad this chapter book was not the first one my child and I read together otherwise I would have had to scrap the series altogether.

Great story!
I liked the suspense of the story. It really kept me guessing! I have liked all the books in this series.
