## Overview

The JIM DUNLOP EVH5150 EQ Effects Pedal is a professional-grade analog distortion pedal featuring multi-stage MOSFET technology, a 3-band EQ for precise tonal shaping, a boost switch for instant gain elevation, and an integrated noise gate to maintain clarity. Designed in collaboration with Eddie Van Halen, it delivers versatile, high-quality sound in a compact 1.03-pound unit powered by 9 volts.

## Description

The MXR design team has collaborated with Eddie Van Halen to deliver a full range of powerful saturation and hyper-driven tones right at your feet. The resulting EVH 5150 Overdrive joins hand-adjusted multi-stage MOSFETs with a full complement of controls to deliver overdriven tube-like tones and exceptional sonic flexibility through a wide variety of amps and speaker cabinets. Whether on stage or in the studio, the EVH 5150 Overdrive’s controls dial up the whole spectrum-from Eddie’s groundbreaking early classic tones to the high gain, super-articulate sound he uses today. Output and Gain controls set your volume and distortion levels, while the 3-band passive tone stack EQ section shapes your sound to taste. The Boost switch kicks the 5150 Overdrive into high gear with extra gain and compression, and the Gate control-powered by the Smart Gate circuit-tames unwanted noise. The EVH 5150 Overdrive features true bypass switching and comes in a road-worthy housing emblazoned with custom EVH artwork.

Review: Good , very good, SRV, Allman Bros , Hendrix, with additional items. - I also have a slide rig deluxe mk 2 and a Bugera T50 Infinium (using clean channel only now) I tell you this because the chase for these sounds took me 30 years, maybe I can help someone else out. The ts9's and 808's do absolutely nothing for my ears at getting this sound, here's what you need imo; Tube amp, should be decent , doesn't need to be Boutique just decent, a solid state or digital amp is not likely going to cover it. -This evh pedal or a Friedman be od , (but I give the edge to the (evh). -Slide Rig or equal , to give that little polish over the top, I think this Slide rig is basically a high tech, expensive compressor, might not get the sound with a cheap compressor, not sure on that. Oh yes, a decent set of speakers, I'm using Bad Cat Patriot 2x12''s but have a 412 cabinet with celestion vintage 30's I need to try that , it will probably be better. There so much bs out there on youtube with people trying to sell you stuff to get these tones, I have tried every pedal imaginable, usually little distortion pedals and overdrives, it wasn't till I spend a gob of money on these EVH and Slide rig pedals that I got this sound nailed. I did have a line six pod go, that was 'close' , running into my tube amp, but nothing like what I have now. You can skip some pedal quality if you can run your good tube amp dimed all the time, but most of us can't do that lol... I don't think you will ever get that quality sound with the cheaper 80 to 100 dollar pedals, I have like 600 dollars now in just two pedals lol, but could have saved a lot more than that, had I known this is what I needed. I needed something for slide, the slide rig does that in spades, I tried the SSS , it did nothing for me, now what is odd , is that the EVH Pedal gives me most of what I need for single note leads and chording, but the slide rig adds a big touch of class and fatness to the overall picture while not using slide. Also I should note that you need a single coil pup in the neck to get the SRV Duane Allman , Dicky Betts etc sound, a strat works for that , and doesn't have to be Fender, just a good strat with single coil , neck, then sometimes if using wah pedal , a hot rails in the bridge is ok or better than single coil , depending on taste. One more note on this pedal, what is incredible with this pedal is the overdrive itself, when you only turn the gain up to like 7 or 8 oclock which means very little gain, this sets the base for that huge, clear, thunk thunk that you want for srv etc, but you can also turn the gain up for Classic Rock and achieve a high quality sound, I can't speak for today's metal, but it probably gets pretty close on that as well. This pedal is now essential to my sound, I may get a second one as this is true bypass, and I would like to have a spare as well as be able to switch between classic rock and blues, without having to kneel down and fiddle with the gain knob. It would have been cool to have that channel switching option, but really not a big deal, the pedal would have cost more and take up more valuable space on a pedal board. I didn't realize this was made by MXR, a product that I never gravitated to in the past, but truly this pedal is out of the park good imo. .. Props to the late EVH for his collaboration (I guess he did) on this pedal, really a great pedal.
Review: Nice pedal - Nice overdrive pedal. Gives a real vintage sound.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice pedal

Nice overdrive pedal. Gives a real vintage sound.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wow! More than Just an Overdrive Pedal!
*by K***R on December 29, 2019*

I didn't have huge expectations for this pedal since I already had an Ibanez TS-9 and I figured it would just be a little different coloring of the overdrive. The TS-9 is supposed to be the holy grail of overdrive pedals. It does a fine job...however, the EVH pedal is NOT just an overdrive pedal! This is optimized gain on tap. I don't know how it does what it does, or how it sounds on other amps, but on my solid state Fender Champion 100 it really brought it to life! You can dial in VH tone very easily....but it does so much more! It sounds best on a clean channel, but if you are careful and use it judiciously with your gain channel it can really enhance that nicely as well! So many options and so many flavors of gain, sustain, response, pinch/chord harmonics, and yes Marshall growl...even on a Fender!. I doubt I will be using my TS-9 anymore. The EVH 5150 OD is that remarkable. You will only know if you try it and see for yourself. Very happy with this and it solved a lot of my tone issues with the Champion 100 gain channel.
