Very good book!
This is a very helpful book! I am continually going back and looking in the table of contents for specific chapters I need to read to refresh myself on stuff. I have a child with Autism and it really helps me. It’s worth buying!

Excellent for wherever your child falls on the spectrum - a little or a lot
Other books I have seen focus more on psychology and personal anecdotes (such as "The Explosive Child"); this one actually helps you know WHAT TO DO. It is easy to read, giving plain-spoken, useful strategies; sometimes mentioning them comprehensively in just one paragraph. It's helped me understand my 4-year old son and given me more empathy now that I have an idea of how he's processing what's happening. Dealing with autism is almost as hard on parents as their children, and we have to re-learn how function as well. I disagree with another comment about this book not being useful for high-functioning kids. It is divided into sections such as sensory, behavior, etc., and it is very simple to skip around at your leisure to find what you need. It is a *spectrum*, with some kids having trouble with some things more than others, rather than simply "very autistic" or "a little autistic". For example, my son has supreme difficulty with transitions, feeding issues, and temper tantrums, but not sleeping problems or tactile sensory issues. This doesn't make him more or less autistic; it's just where he falls on the spectrum. It's worth having the book for whatever you specifically need. I'm very grateful to have found this resource, and will be passing it along to his preschool teacher.

Does live up to the title
This book, amazingly enough, does live up to the title. It is filled with great ideas for teaching, playing, and understanding kids with Autism. The ideas have things so simple that if you don't already have the stuff around your house, they are very inexpensive to buy. It has a lot of outdoor activities as well as indoor, year round, and most of them I wonder why I never thought of them! This is really a great book from authors who really understand Autism. Whether you are a teacher or a parent this book is great for either. One of the main things you can do to help someone with Autism is to keep them busy and learning! My mom made sure anything I showed interest in she would help me pursue. The world is hard for us with Autism, but staying busy and throwing ourselves into things we enjoy is one of our few ways of coping and feeling worth. While these kids are young they should be shown many things and encouraged in what they can do!

My friend is so happy with this book!
Dear Amazon customers:I bought this book for a friend of mine who lives in Mexico. She had been struggling looking for helpful hints to help her son both at home and at school. She told me that the book has a lot of ideas that you can start putting into practice since the very first moment you have the book in your hands. Also, don't need to follow a specific sequence when reading the book. So, you can jump back and forth looking for what you really need. Many of the ideas are ideas that you don't even imagine they exist. She mentioned that her son was reluctant to draw pictures and she did not know why. She had always handed white copy paper to her son for coloring or drawing. Apparently, the white paper reflects to much light for the very light-sensitive eyes of some autistic children. From this book she got the idea of using a different color of paper. Her son started making drawings and painting a lot since two weeks ago. This was the first idea she put into practice and, it worked! My friend is so happy with the book!Sincerely,Miguel

Better for older children
I bought this book to give me some ideas to broaden the activities that I can do with my "mildly" autistic 2-year-old daughter. However, she only communicates through PECS so we can't do most of the activities in the book. This book touches on many different subjects and I can see me using it more in the future when she is more verbal. When I purchased this book, I thought that it covered potty training as one reviewer said. However, it does not cover it. The authors said that there is too much information to include and to purchase a different book if you are looking to potty train.

Useful tips
This book is a keeper. I have made a few pages of notes and have dogeared some pages. I've tried several of the suggestions, from the outdoor bracelet (p. 10) to the reading suggestions (p. 79). If one tip doesn't work, you only have several hundred more to experiment with! I say, give this book and these tips a try!

The best book I found so far!
I have been researching books on Asperger's Syndrome due to a recent diagnosis within my family. There are so many books out there and it is so easy to think you can read them all - but if you have an Asperger's Syndrome child in your home - you do not have enough time to read a magazine - forget trying to read 30 or more books. This book is laid out like a How-to book. The chapters are split up into tiny bits and the contents page is detailed so you can go right to the issue you really want to read about - at the moment! I had the paperback version from the library, but it is huge and heavy. I always have my Kindle available (a great distraction tool!) so I bought the Kindle version. I love it! Look it over with the Look Inside feature - you will see why I bought it...maybe you will buy it too! PS. This author has other books available - and she has not disappointed me in any of them!
