Mid-Size Track Plans for Realistic Layouts

There are only 10 themes really (railroads, locations) in the book, with a total of 26 plans in all. For example, the Western Maryland Thomas subdivision has three versions of an N scale layout and one HO scale plan, not that in itself that is a problem because any plan can be adapted to any scale. The plans in themselves are worthy of planning consideration and or elements are planned very well to reflect the real world location. (The Western Maryland Thomas subdivision being one of my favourite designs in the book for what it's worth).Bernad Kempinski's writing style is easy to read and informative. Offering insight into the locale and the types of operation that could be/is expected. The only departure I felt, was that the Mid-size terminology is in some cases misleading!... The chapter on the Utah Railway for example suggest a HO scale layout of 13.3 feet x 30 feet dimensions... ! I would have thought that maybe 10 x 20 would be about a mid-size average (single garage size), beyond which, large layout status should qualify (I know, its all subjective). Despite this, the plans are logical and well drawn, well researched and beautifully presented with colour photos, and black and white historical photos being abundant.Mid size track plans for realistic layouts is a worthy edition of track plans to anyone's collection.

Excellent book for model railroad enthusiasts working on their layout designs. The example designs are based on prototypical sections of track. Many designs are shown in multiple scales with some nice additional options. Highly recommended!

Bought this book and others for some track plan ideas for a HO scale layout. Of all my books this is my least favorite.
