A lovely story about language barriers, being patient and observant of others.
This is a short story to share with younger readers, which is about a bear who loves to chat all the time, wherever he is. He is sad that few other bears want to chat with him and so goes off on a boat across the sea to find a friend to chat with. Bear ends up on an island full of birds who do not speak bears language, so bear becomes frustrated and unhappy, until one clever bird discovers a way to communicate and learn a common language that bear and the other birds can understand. The bears language is represented as "raar"s and the birds language is represented as "squawk"s. In a way this story teaches young children, not only that people can have different languages, but also that signs can be used to represent language. In this case the shape of an eyebrow is used to represent a different need... it is a unique way of teaching young children that shapes and signs can represent speech. I think this would be a lovely book to share with young children if you were not only discussing actual language differences, but also that some people have disabilities, which mean they use language by signing. The book delivers a message that if we are patient with each other and take notice of each others needs and expressions, that we can find ways to understand each other and be cooperative. There is also a final little twist to the tale and a final back page image of how that issue is solved, but I won't spoil that one.The pages have full colour illustrations to add to the story and give you plenty to talk about with your little one if you are reading the story to them.

Fun, colourful, endearing
My 2 year old insists on us reading this book approximately 1.645 million times a day. The book is so good, however, that I don't even mind the near constant repetition! It's eye-catching, fun and silly, and beautifully illustrated.

Vibrant and fun
Chatterbox Bear is a lovely story book for children. We follow Gary the bear who is finding that although he really wants to talk to people, nobody seems to want to talk to him. He sails off to an island where he meets some birds. But the birds don't speak bear and Gary doesn't speak birds so they end up having to find their own way to communicate using Gary's eyebrow expressions. The illustrations are gorgeous, really colourful and vibrant. The pages are matte rather than gloss and I liked this about it. The story is lovely too. On a surface level it's lots of fun, but if you look for a deeper meaning you could think of it in terms of how we communicate with fellow human beings who don't speak the same language as us. It promotes tolerance and diversity and I thought that was a great message for children to learn.Really great!

Beautiful, bold illustrations complement an inspiring message
The multitalented Pippa Curnick has both written and illustrated this humorous yet touching tale of a talkative bear who annoys his neighbours with his constant chatter. Eventually, he heads for pastures new in search of conversation.Fortunately he finds a new place to live and a whole new host of friends in the shape of a flock of exotic birds, but first they have to overcome their language barrier.Pippa's illustrations are a breath of fresh air, they are so bold and zingy. The colours really "sing" and jump off the page. This is a beautiful book about empathising with others and taking the time to communicate with them. It would make a lovely gift.
