Paul Simon - You're the One

A Must For The Simon Fan...Very Good For Others More Casually Inclined
This concert, while in support of his You’re The One release (6 songs from this late 2000 release), it, largely, rests on his more well known catalog. That’s a good thing as “The One” is a solid, but not his most memorable material. The concert appears to be taped in a mid-sized hall in Paris amongst a very appreciative audience. This is Paul Simon in a rebuilding mode in many ways. The Capeman and The One albums didn’t sell as well as typical Simon releases. Paul wants to just be the humble troubadour who also happens to rock out with an absolutely stellar band. The band deserves accolades besides not only are they totally sympathetic to Paul’s music, they also raise it as only blue-chip musicians do when paired with a muse who inspires them. Spectacular sonics and amazing musical finesse and nuance is what the viewer is treated to here. The fantastic songs are given their due and Simon seems more than inspired…he’s extremely humble and relaxed. With a small amount of banter, perhaps due to the language barrier, Paul just rips through an enjoyable concert. My favorite Paul concert is actually one never released, as far as I know, for DVD and that would be BBC’s Paul Simon Live At St. Lukes. But, it’s truncated and for all it’s excellence the sound and the depth of songs don’t match this release. I’d say it’s a must for the Simon fan and a wonderful, at least, one-time watch for the more casual one. For me it’s rich with songs not heard on other Simon videos as well as hitting many of the high-ppints of his catalog. It even includes a cover which is a bit rare indeed. All in all, so much here to prove what a wonderful talent Paul Simon is. The crack band just pushes it that much higher. Enthusiastically recommended.

For amateur audiophiles
A couple reviewers dogged on the sound quality of this dvd and I put their review to the test. My guess is that their systems were like this: they had the dvd in surround sound with perhaps one of those $500 surround sound kits. First off, make sure the sound is coming from the two front speakers only. Its a music dvd, therefore it should be heard through the front speakers only, just like a cd. I noticed in surround, most of the sound came from the center channel, similar to a movie, which limited the sound's depth immensely. I can't stress that point enough. I also can't say enough on how much I can't stand those surround sound kits. We don't know if those other reviewers had a surround kit, however, I can testify that my system is geared primarily for music, not movies.Onto the sound...the bass is clearly more prominent here than in Paul's concert in central park in 1990. This can be seen as good or bad, depending on your taste. However, nowhere did the bass sound muddy, even at very high volumes. Also, since the two venues the dvd was recorded in are much smaller than central park, more subtle percussion sounds really come alive on this recording. By the way, Paul's band uses lots of percussion in this dvd! With all that said, the horns really blew me away. Such a rich sound and packs a tremendous punch; listen to Hurricane Eye, you'll see. My only complaint is the Paul's mic level. Seemed like the volume was too high at times for my own taste. Overall, I thought it sounded great on my system, but keep in mind, if your speakers are geared for surround sound, you may disagree. ts

Great sound from a Great Artist!
Paul Simon and his ensemble put on a marvelous show. The DTS and DDSS 5.1 are both rich, yet simple enough to reproduce the show sound without engineering it to death. Simon fans and music fans will like the renditions of his hits with some done in novel beats. What a musical treat for the music lover!! The percussionists are extremely talented in this performance that energize the guitars along with a full vocal performance. Definitely, a masterful live presentation. The video is excellent, yet simple enough to show just what you want to see--THIS SHOW. If your Home Theater System is up to date, you are going like this DVD. The surround is again subtle and is not meant to be a demo for DTS dimensionality. It is a concert, and it sounds like a concert, so don't expect instruments from the rear channels. Be sure to watch this one with someone special and be prepared to sing along, clap your hands, and snap your fingers. Are you into music? Don't miss this one.

Must have part of a Paul SImon collection
This is a phenomenal concert. The musicians are all stellar. Who except Paul Simon could pull off 3 percussionists, a washboard and 2 accordions (plus everyone else) playing at the same time? I have very high expectations for any of his performances and this one does not disappoint. After wearing out the vinyl or CD from endless listening of the studio recordings, it is always refreshing to hear the raw energy and variety of live performance. If you aren't very familiar with Paul Simon, get this DVD and be prepared to be blown away. If you already know his music, get this DVD and see him at his best. When I got the DVD, I watched the concert start-to-finish 3 times in a row.dg

Still Got It!
Paul Simon's voice has lost a little of its clarity and range with the passing years. His songs, however, seem to grow ever more powerful. He tours with a spectacularly talented band, and he is still a great performer. This October 2000 concert is a triumph. I found "Pledging My Love" to be a particularly effective introduction to "The Late Great Johnny Ace."The DVD features stereo, Dolby 5.1 and DTS audio tracks. The video is enhanced for widescreen TVs.Recommended.

Simon at his best - on stage to an audience
Well film, with great sound quality on a visually exciting stage, this is a great Paul Simon DVD. On his tours after a new CD has been produced, he always brings the CD musicians and this is no exception. The London event was just like this and, having the DVD, brings it all back to life again. Some reviewers mention that he changes the older songs on this DVD, both as a soloist and working with the band. He does this (as most touring singers do) to alleviate the boredom of playing the same songs for years and, additionally, as he grows older, he probably "feels" them differently.Enjoy it for what it is, a great DVD of an excellent concert. (If you want the older versions, go back to the "Paul Simon Songbook" on which they don't get any more "authentic".)

Well worth buying
If you're a fan of Paul Simon you should love this with songs from every era of his career, some that don't get performed as often which for me was a thrill. The band are the musicians he has worked with a long time now (Steve Gadd, Mark Stewart and the rest) and as usual play perfectly.Picture quality and sound is very good too.
