Another Storm Defender Cape success
I am a dog behavior counselor and have recommended these to many clients with thunder phobic dogs. Their rate of success is excellent. I tried one on my own dog who is not very reactive, just uneasy. After one or two uses during storms, she now responds by walking into it when I hold it up for her. Once on, she is very relaxed. I also use it as a blanket when she's already asleep/lying down and a storm starts. I simply cover her with it, turn up a fan or whatever to help cover the sounds and she remains lying and quiet. Totally worthwhile!

Very Good Purchase, Although Not Completely Effective
Our rescue dog Lily, half golden and half border collie (but all border collie in her soul), has severe thunderstorm phobia. She literally trembles to the point that she looks as if she will go into convulsions. We did some research and found this item. I searched for it on Amazon and was pleased to save about $12 on the price, as well as free 2-day shipping as a Prime member. We've been having a pretty busy thunderstorm season here in SW Montana this year, so we really needed something that helps her get through them. At our shop/office, the cape works like a charm, but at home, it doesn't appear to do much good. This is probably because our office/shop is constructed of very thick concrete with steel, and our home is a regular stick built condo that seems to amplify sound and vibration, so she's all over our bed, jumping up and down, even wearing the cape. I would still recommend it, as she's much improved during day storms.

It drove us crazy as there was nothing we could do to calm her and she sounded like she was going to have a stroke
WOW!!! I was very skeptical about this product but it works! My Pomeranian, Bella, would shake, pant and run around the house looking for a tight place to hide the minute she felt rain coming (which usually ended up being behind the toilet). It drove us crazy as there was nothing we could do to calm her and she sounded like she was going to have a stroke. I decided to try the Storm Defender after reading the reviews. It rained the very next day after receiving it. I put it on her after she had already started shaking and panting and within two minutes her shaking started to subside. After about 10 minutes she laid down on the living room floor and WENT TO SLEEP!!!!!! Now, when I know there is rain in the forecast I put it on her and she acts like she doesn't even know it's raining. Even when she goes outside to do her business in the rain she is calm. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! And THANK YOU from Bella!

Works after a bit of time.
Having been a street dog in Singapore, our dog gets very, very anxious during storms (before them even) or fireworks. In the past we had used the "Anxiety Wrap" which worked fairly well some of the time. This cape seems to work better than the wrap even though it is not a perfect solution either. The first time we used the wrap during a storm, he calmed down and curled up on the floor within about 10-15 minutes and that has been true each time we have used it--it takes a bit of time but it does calm him down. He also seems to realize that the cape helps and now comes willingly to let us put it on him.

Does not work for my dog
My dog has a severe anxiety and fear disorder triggered by thunder storms. She is particularly sensitive to the air pressure or "charge" of a storm even many miles away. We have tried everything from herbal calming treats and flower essences, to the thunder shirt. A highly renowned veterinary behaviorist recommended this storm defender cape - so it must work for many dogs. Maybe I didn't introduce it to her properly, or maybe it really doesn't work, we'll never know. She gets more scared when I put it on, seeming to think her fear must be justified if I'm now putting the storm cape on - and commits to hours of cowering. The final effort was calming drugs, which have been the only true fix for her severe anxiety - but at least I can say we tried just about every natural remedy possible. I can only give this cape 2 stars, since clearly it is useless to me. But it does seem well made, is fast and easy to put on when the dog is freaking out, and fits well. It costs no more than a month of meds, so I am keeping it in case we learn how to properly use it in the future combined with medication and training.

I believe this thing works
You must put it on BEFORE the storm is happening. I have Jack Russell Terrier and he has been going crazy with all the storms we have been having. He violently shakes, chews, hidesโฆ basically he is in bad shape before, during a storm, and after. I resorted to drug him with doggie downers. We Tried the Thundershirt Dog Anxiety Treatment but that was just a snug fitting/Velcro sweater. Did not fix his problem. Did nothing for his problems. We purchased the StormFender cape and put it on him Before the Storm starts (we live on the water so we can see the storms coming) IT WORKS. Had it for a month now and He has not started shaking or any and weird behavior. I think he likes wearing it, sporty. Bright red on the outside with Silver/conductive lining that conducts static in the air and prevents the dog from getting shocked? Not sure it works for all dogs, they all have different reasons why they react. But for Sparky it appears to do the job. AGAIN- You must put it on BEFORE the storm is happening. When we put it on during a storm we only get marginal results but even them it appears to help.

Doesn't work for us, but maybe it will for your dog.
It didn't work for my dog ... he has severe anxiety to noise (thunder, wind, fireworks, etc.). With the cape on he still knew the storm was coming and I didn't think it worked. I've had several other products that are similar and it just doesn't work for him ... maybe it will for you and most dog owners desperate to find something other then drugs will at least want to try it.
