Price is great and the markings are easy to read
I bought these to replace my old one that I bought over 10 years ago that was getting quite hard to read. These work well but when hard boiling eggs it is best to leave the eggs in the pan and remove them from the heat and let the water cool down for 5 to 10 minutes to finish the process. I tried to take them out once the indicator said they were hard boiled. I carefully drained the water out of the pan and ran cold water of them for quite a few minutes and found the yolks were not quite as hard as I preferred. Do a bit of experimenting to figure out how to make them just the way you want them. I only use this item for hard boiled eggs so I don't know how well they work for softer ones. Still the best tool for the busy cook.

Works Well, Simple, Reliable
It looks to me like there are many fake 5 star reviews for this type of product - short with no details and fake reviews are unfair to the product and consumer. This is actually a very decent device and convenient. I dont feel the need for a steaming egg cooker for which requires the accurate water measurement and also another "thing" to take up more kitchen space (even though they work very well).Quick Steps:- normal temperature water in pan to cover eggs- place device in center of pan, turn on heat sufficient for at least a very light boil- remove pan when indicator shows desired level of "doneness"- I place pan with eggs in sink and rinse with cold water until cool, then remove eggs to fridge or counter top. This can prevent over cooking from residual heat- Whole process takes about 8 minutes from start to finish, and very very easy clean up.Things to note:Again, just my observation. The device is some type of plastic or resin with a very thin color temperature detecting sheet about 1/3 from the top, in the resin. The curved resin at the top acts as a magnifying glass which makes reading the done-ness easier to see. At room temperature the device is easy to read but as the eggs cook and the indicator changes, the visibility and reading from the egg timer becomes less distinct (blurry) but the level of cooking is still easy to determine. There was one comment about a scratched indicator - the flat bottom of the unit looks like it was drawn across sandpaper. All the lines were parallel and consistent and having worked with plastics and fiberglass in mass production they may be machine cut from a long cylinder of units then perhaps lightly sanded or not. This feature may also be on purpose to stop the timer from possibly sticking to the bottom of a flat pan (suction effect). Regardless, it looks intended, does not detract at all from the appearance or function.Another comment I read talked about the smell. I noticed this too - it almost smells like a slow plastic burn; not sure if this will go away over time (only used this twice) but there does not seem to be any damage or discoloration to the device and given that the eggs are sealed (more or less) by the shell, do not expect it to affect them at all.The various manufactures claim they are BPA safe etc (cant verify this) but if true then the light smell would not matter. My guess is that the plastic smell will dissipate over several uses. As long as it it not toxic then its not a deal breaker.I am buying more as small gifts for friends - price shop on amazon as there are several different values for essentially the same item.Would buy again, and am expecting to use this frequently. This has to be more accurate than a mechanical timer since mechanical timers don't know the heat setting on your stove. I will probably experiment and see if per-heating water makes a difference in results. Inserting eggs into boiling water will probably result in them cracking (not recommended).Simple, fast, efficient, accurate, slight plastic aroma with at least the first few uses.Aloha

Need an Egg Timer?
I have been using egg timers for years now.All of my previous ones were inaccurate and worse of all, they fall apart (separate). The other junk, i had to just throw away. Then I saw these on amazon.Read about them and I was convinced.I have been using them for quite some time now.My wife likes her eggs, perfectly cooked. These timers do exactly that. When it is done, it is done.In addition, they are not cheapy made.I bought the 5 pack for protection over this. But since then, i have given some away to my friends.I highly recommend this product.
