The Road from Cowardice to Courage
An extraordinary book for its time, Stephen Crane describes the intimate details and the innermost thoughts of a newly minted soldier on the front lines of a Civil War battlefield. With bullets whizzing about him, and thick smoke and corpses as a backdrop, Henry flees his first encounter with battle. As he wanders about in the aftermath, he struggles with his shame and seeks rationalizations for his cowardice. Was he not the wiser for having fled a battle that was lost? Does not an animal flee a predator when sensing the predator is a superior force? But then Henry discovers that his battalion actually won the battle, and he returns to it after suffering a rather ignominious wound. But his comrades assume he was shot in the head and consider him a hero. Henry is transformed and goes on to fight courageously, earning the admiration of his comrades.I find Crane's writing choppy and stilted. But it is perhaps this writing style that adds a sense of realism to his novel. The young Crane, who never saw battle and was writing more than a decade after the end of the Civil War, displays an astonishing talent for introspection. He creates with Henry Fleming a timeless protagonist in a coming of age novel that remains an American classic.

Book review on the Red Badge of Courage
The Red Badge of Courage is about a young boy named Henry who goes off to war. He is caught up in the chaos of the battle of Chancellorsville. As he tries to survive the horrors of the Civil War, he also tries to find out about himself and his feelings about killing men like himself. In the book, I like how the author uses symbolic ideas to contrast how the battle was confusing and terrible. I also liked how real the author made the scenes. My favorite part of the book was when Henry walked away from the sounds of the battle, and went into the forest because it was so quiet and peaceful that it made him forget that there was a war going on. The only thing I didn’t like about this book was when a tattered soldier started talking to Henry and annoying him. I thought it was just unnecessary. My favorite character is Wilson because his brings cheerfulness into the camp. He is kind at heart and doesn’t like to see his friends in pain. I would recommend this book to people who are not affected by gruesome depictions of wounded and dead men. I would NOT recommend this book to children under the age of 10 (especially girls). Some parts are extremely descriptive and very lifelike making it very easy to picture the wounds and fighting.

A solid war novel
The Red Badge of Courage is told through the perspective of a young man from the North named Henry Fleming or "the youth" as Crane calls him often. Reluctantly sent on his way from a small farm in the North, Henry excitedly signs up for the army and is eager to fight his first battle against the South. Henry finds out a lot about himself and matures quite a bit from the first battle. During the first battle, Henry flees the fight and is ashamed of himself for a while. Henry then gathers up the strength to once again give it his all, this time heroically undertaking a great role of leadership in the final battle that would indeed earn him the "Red Badge of Courage".I liked this book for a few reasons. For one, it's so nice to actually see a character develop and have very human flaws as Henry did and go to possible redemption at the end. In addition, the novel as others have said is a short, but surprisingly accurate depiction of war and not just a rosy outlook in which the main character is flawless from start to finish as well as the war in general for the North. Lastly, the length makes it a very enjoyable novel that you can finish in a day or so.For having never read the book in school, I definitely would recommend this to anyone who has done the same.

A Story of the Experiences of a Young Union Soldier in the Civil War
I first read this book when I was 12 years old, many years ago, and I remember that it was one of my favorites in those days. But I didn't remember much beyond that, so I decided to read it again. This classic was written in a style you don't see in American literature any more; a very descriptive book with elegant language, typical of 19th century writing. It is the story of an 18-year old young man who joined the Union Army and fought in the Civil War. Much of the story is about the feelings of this boy turning into a man in the harshest way, so there is not as much action as you would expect from a book written today. The book is about Henry Fleming's experiences in one particular battle, the first fighting for the 304th Infantry Regiment. In the battle, it is about what he sees and how he feels during the fight, rather than who is winning or losing, and how Henry changed from the first attack until the end of the battle, when they were marching away from the battlefield.I found this look at how the young men who fought that war felt about the experience to be realistic and very interesting. But if you are looking for a guts and glory book about fighting and winning and heroic deeds, you may not enjoy this one.

A good one
If you read it carefully and pay attention to all the themes, symbols, metaphors, you will enjoy it a lot. Of course, the historic period is one of the most interesting of all the American history.I suggest to watch the movie "The red badge of courage" (1951) by John Huston.
