The Stitches of Creative Embroidery

Definitely my favourite stitch book.How can anyone who loves stitches be without this book? The author has a very personal formal style of writing, which makes the book a great read as well as an exceptional reference book.There is a brief history of embroidery and some general information, then the stitches in sections: flat, looped, chained, knotted, couching and laid work. There are many variations of the common stitches, but the best part must be the many unusual stitches from all around the world, and the fascinating information on their history and use.There is an addition useful section covering further general information including: borders, geometric designs, embroidering on printed fabrics, spontaneous stitching, and a few 3-D stitches.The general layout of the book may not be as easy to refer to as other step-by-step stitch books but the instructions and illustrations are surprisingly easy to follow. There are a few pictures in colour of finished items but the many black and white illustrations are very clear and include samplers, historical paintings and objects showing where the inspiration for a stitch came from.

This is a brilliant book about stiches. Warm recommendation.

Not so fancy looking, but full of inspiring ideas,well explained and with a lot of suggestions for different uses of the stitches .Very wide range of them is covered-from traditional to more rare ones.A lot of historical info is included too.Excellent book for everyone who embroider.

An excellent book beautifully written. It gives the impression the author is talking directly to the reader which is very rare. It is full of fantastic ideas and should be on the shelf of every embroidery fan young and old.
