Surbiton Bombed - memories of my parents
I grew up in Surbiton and was fascinated to read this book which reminded me of so many things my parents talked of whe. I was young. I used to walk past St Marks church every day and remember it as a bombed out shell, and then watching over the years as it was rebuilt. My father was too young for the First world war, and too old for the Second. He worked for The council in Shalston Villas, and his role was fire watch next to the fire station. I remember my mother joking, not always very humously, about the antics that went on in the back of the ambulances whilstmhenwas in duty. War had its upside. My grandparents lived in Douglas Road, and I had not realised how close they came to being bombed.
