A good tale.
I am of course familiar with the tale, who is not. I remember seeing it in my childhood and it seemed a lot longer then. A good judge of the film would be my mother, a harsh critic if there ever was one. She complained when I put the DVD in and by the end of the film was asking me questions about the characters and the plot.

Very good acting
I like this film. Have watched it, when it was first released. The novel was excellent and the film makers stuck pretty much to it.

It's very well made and Chamberlain is absolutely excellent as the twins
It's very well made and Chamberlain is absolutely excellent as the twins. I had seen it in the long past and liked it, so recently I bought itbut this time, when I am rereading the book, I found this movie version just too harrowing at times. It is a very sad story really, the basic theme was conceived after Dumas heard of a note that was found when the Bastille was stormed by the people of Paris at the start of the French Revolution. The note referred to a prisoner "in an iron mask" and Dumas came up with a substantial plot around this. The cast in this movie is stripped to the minimum so my favourite musketeers, Aramis and Porthos, both hugely important in the book plot, are completely omitted. In fact, I think Athos is missing too. Unfortunately, d'Artagnan is my least favourite of the muskeeteers, and it was irritating to find his part in the book changed too much to cover the other musketeers more or less. Aramis was the prime mover behind Dumas's plot, really the main character in the book along with d'Artagnan opposing him, and without Aramis, it really doesn't quite make sense to try to use d'Artagnan alone. It was also confusing that Chamberlain had played Aramis in the Richard Lester version of the Three Musketeers filmed not so long before. If you haven't read the book, and don't care about the other musketeers, of course there is d'Artagnan, and the plot as adjusted hangs together well in itself and I'd recommend this to you.But for me, the best (though also very changed) version of this story is this movie: The Man In The Iron Mask [DVD] [1998] starring Leonardo di Caprio who surprised me by being excellent as the King, Jeremy Irons simply wonderful as schemer Aramis, Malkovic as noble Athos, Depardieu as cheerful Porthos, and Gabriel Byrne as the absolutely perfect d'Artagnan - the most I have ever liked this hero is in this movie! There are some major changes to the book plot but they work very well so long as you are happy with changes. I thought I'd find the changes annoying, but this version doesn't take itself too seriously, there are plenty of laughs, and it's very moorish..The Chamberlain version is closest to the original though stripped down in characters and very serious and sombre.

Good take on a classic
The movie itself I found was pretty good, richard chamberlain done a fantastic job and I was a little surprised to have seen donald plesence in it.The picture quality was good and it was in English I just double checked the sound option and was able to turn the subtitles off and I had no issues with it playing all in all I'm happy I was able to purchase this version.

Follows fairly closely to Dumas' classic.
A brilliant classic book and the DVD follows the story fairly well. Good performances by all. Enjoyable multiple times.
