Ocean Sea

Emotionally honest "realistic" fantasy
Baricco has written a tremendous story of the truth of our human condition - individuals with a variety of obsessions - revenge, art, science, sensual experience - who are seemingly unrelated come together for the healing of the sea. They come together in a small ocean inn run by fay children. At the center of the book stands a horrofic story of humanity at its worst. . . .The structure of the book is a difficult one but one Baricco has fashioned into the absolutely correct form for his story. The prose ranges from very lush, descriptive prose to very taciturn conversation, from art catalogue entries to poetic prayers. Occasionally a sentence or two will misfire, but Baricco has exquisite control over his medium. This book belongs on any must read list.

Heartbreakingly beautiful. Poetry meets prose.
Never before has a novel moved me so deeply with just two pages of its prose. The author is so good (and the translator too) that I found myself tasting brand-new emotions, new flavors of heartbreakingly wistful love, through these words. At times the story itself is heavy-handed and unimpressive. And the book is rather short, and the chapters don't all hang together so well. But the layers of meaning, the metaphors and above all the well-described emotions, put Ocean Sea in the highest stratum of literary novels. It's that good. It's the sort of book that you'll want to give to a friend after you finish it, and then you'll want to buy another copy for yourself because you don't want to be without it.

This is my favourite novel of all time
This is my favourite novel of all time, I have bought multiple copies as I always gift it to others. It is magical, I can open it at any page and immediately be completely absorbed, which is a big plus if you're a mum and need a quick escape.

Awesome Literary Cubist Piece
I went through a phase where I wanted to read anything written in an abstract literary cubist sort of way. This hit the nail on the head, and was definitely worth the buy. It can seem a bit clunky at times, but the core of this book will leave you wanting more. Give it a shot, you won't be sorry.

A Beautiful Tragedy
This is honestly one of my favorite books ever, if not my absolute favorite. If you like beautiful writting, tragic stories, and interesting charicters this a must read. Even if the beginning frusterates you a bit, stick with this book because its worth it in the end. Let your imagination run wild with the end because everyone I have discussed this book with has a slightly different opinion and that is another reason to love this book.

Useful English translation
I’m using this kindle edition of the English translation of Oceano Mare because I am reading the original in Italian.I can annotate the kindle edition and use it to check my understanding of the Italian text.I can make the text larger which makes it easier to see and I can note useful phrases. It makes it easier for me to check Italian structures and I can re-read the sections I have prepared more speedily. It saves space, not having to write notes on paper, and it’s easier to cross reference things. It might not be to everyone’s taste to read a book in this way but it suits me. I can read a chapter in English so that I have an idea of the plot and then I can look at the Italian carefully.

Un'oceano di emozioni
Baricco è unico, inconfondibile, stupefacente in ogni riga. La storia di Oceano Mare è immensa quanto ciò che rappresenta il titolo del libro.

Immature
Not much substance. Author seems to be more concerned with its literarly form than the plot and character design and in my opinion, its pretentious attempt to be poetic only comes out as droning.
