But I'm pleased with its capabilities
Outstanding product, given the current state of mobile backup and storage - I'm sure future editions will improve upon features and capabilities. But I'm pleased with its capabilities. We absolutely need tools, such as the Fuel, to protect important data in an off-device/off-cloud/off-line mode to insure optimum security from malware, hacks, and identity theft ... Nothing better than having important files stored off-line in one drawer, and my loaded .357 stored in another ...

Good fix for storage issues
I bought this specifically to use for TV Shows, Movies and Music when vacationing as i have always only ever bought the iphone, ipad's, and mini-ipad with 16G of space. It seems with every update by apple more and more memory is need to install the update. I think it won't be long before they don't even offer 16G versions of their product. Everything worked as advertised and as mentioned by other reviewers. The only glich is as of this writing the iphone or ipad APP that you use to control the files that you store on LaCie does not work with latest IOS upgrade. I did get message from the manufacture that they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. Luckily i had not yet upgraded my ipad to lates IOS version but discovered this while attemtping to us LaCie with my phone which already had the updated version.

Does Not Work w iOS8
i ordered this up for a use on a road trip to stream movies to 3 kids w iPads. From the product description, this should be the perfect tool for this. However, when trying to test out the streaming,I was unable to stream an iTunes purchase to my MacBook Air (yosemite), iPhone 5s (8.1) or iPhone 6 (8.2).I contacted Lacie tech support (relatively prompt and courteous support) and after a few quick exchanges w them, they admitted that the Fuel has issues streaming w ios 8 devices and that this is a know issue that is currently being worked on. They were unable to offer any sort of work around besides downgrading to ios7. At this point, ios8 has been out for almost a year so it is completely unacceptable that they cannot properly support I yet when it is the intended use of the device.I cannt recommend this Item to anyone intending to use it with iTunes/ios until they address the streaming issue.Besides the above complaint, the hardware is just ok. Doesn't necessarily feel cheap (is made of plastic), but also doesn't feel nearly as high quality as my numerous other Lacie devices. The Seagate/Lacie apps are useable but not very elegant in their design and also kind of clunky.Overall, 3 stars hardware, 1 star performance, 2 stars for the app.

Fortunately, I had a power inverter
Purchased the Lacie Fuel for a family road trip from the West Coast to the Mid West and back. Before leaving I ripped 150 movies, including some that I purchased from the Apple iTunes store. I have a MacBook Pro with a usb 2 port. I was concerned that the Fuel usb 3 wouldn't be backwards compatible, but those concerns were quickly put to rest. Movie transfers were smooth and quick. The battery didn't last as long as I had hoped. I watched 1.5 movies and the battery died. Fortunately, I had a power inverter, that could charge the Fuel and all our iDevices. ( 4 iPads, and 2 iPhones ) My teens were disappointed that they couldn't watch any movies that I purchased from the iTunes store. The Safari web browser would open up and nothing would happen, even after touching the play button. LaCie needs to remedy this glitch, or straight out say this will not work with iTunes purchased movies. I would also recommend purchasing a power inverter that plugs into your cigarette lighter. Other wise I am happy I purchased the LaCie Fuel.

It's the software.
Like everything else in technology these days it's all about the software, and the software in this device ain't great.Hardware-wise it's fine. It seems to do well. Pretty sturdy build. Small! The functioning between it and an iPad (air) is not bad -- never had any trouble connecting to it or anything (just had to hit the Join button a couple of times a couple of times) -- but the SegateMedia app for the iPad, as others have said, is a bit clunky, although part of that might be the fault of the software on the drive and how it organizes things. However, using the unit wirelessly with a Mac and Safari (and Mountain Lion) is painful. After starting and stopping a couple videos it just freezes up -- as in it doesn't refresh the web pages in Safari. They start downloading, but don't finish. You can still get in with an iPad at the same time, so the whole unit is not frozen. It looks like you have to shut down Safari, and cycle the wireless on the MacBook to get it to go again -- for a couple more videos. I'm not sure, but every time I connect with my MacBook, even after everything has been off (like overnight) it some times still thinks another laptop with the same name is connected and it appends -1, -2, etc. to the MacBook network name. That's not good. The software on the drive tries to "organize" your stuff for you and that whole mess could just go away, or be disable-able as far as I'm concerned. It falls flat on it's face. You can get around it by just connecting to it with the USB cable and copying and organizing the stuff yourself and then using the 'folder view', but if you go back to the 'their view' of things on the drive ALL of your videos show up in their "videos" folder broken up by letter in alphabetical order, even if you had an organized "TV Shows" folder and a "Movies" folder. It's a terabyte drive, but their organization scheme is only good for about 10 files, or maybe just movies, but more than that and things get messy. Like all of my TV show file names start with SxEyy (season x, episode y), so all of those end up, naturally, under "S" in the video folder. S2E04 of Green Acres is right next to S2E04 of The Munsters. If you go into the 'folders view' you can navigate your stuff in the hierarchical manner that you have it organized in (like TV Shows/The Big Bang Theory/Season 3/episode X), but in the top level there are things like the "log" folder that has some system logs in it. Hope the kids don't delete any of those. There are a bunch of hidden folders in the root directory that you only see if Win7 or OSX through the USB cable wants you to see them. Why wasn't the log folder one of them? In their organized view menu (on a web page and in the SegateMedia app) there is Videos, Photos, and Music folders. Videos, Photos and Music folders show up in the menu even if you have deleted the Videos and Music folders. Dumb. It should just look at the folders I've created in something like a Media directory and follow their organization. They made it more complicated than it needs to be to be "helpful", or they didn't provide a switch to turn their complicated stuff off. Take your pick.Make sure all of your ID3(?) tags are filled in. If they're not I don't know what would happen, but their organizer seems to like them. The function that goes through and pulls all of the pictures out of the videos and uses them for thumbnails when browsing works well. I think it keeps a database of them. That helps keep the Douglas and Munster families from fighting.Functionally it's a cleaver thing, no doubt about it, and it seems well built, but the software people (I are one of those types), and probably the marketing people, should be maimed a bit.

Great harddrive
Awesome hard drive. We used it as back up on a cruise we took. Worked between walls of the cabins and allowed us to take as many pictures as we wanted on our phones. Worked with all the phones, Iphone 4 4S and two 5s phones.

LaCie Fuel external hard disk
The guide book is dated and in need of revision for Mac OS Catalina. The disc can be used as a storage unit for I-pad, which obviates the need to purchase the more expensive versions of I-pad pro. It also can be used for transfer of files to and from the computer and I-pad device. But the set-up is tricky, and in part, confusing; there is insufficient explanation in the guide about how the wireless functions work vis-a-vis the computer and I-Pad coordinate and the need of both devices to link to the internet when transferring files.

Great product; ignore the instructions
This device was recommended to me by a knowledgeable friend. I ordered it the same day he mentioned it to me, paid for overnight, and had it in my hands less than 24 hours after I had first heard about it.The online instructions seem to deal only with wireless set-up; it took me a couple of minutes to decide to ignore them and just plug the thing into my Mac Air. And there it was on my screen, ready to go.It worked beautifully right at the start and I've had zero problems in the intervening two weeks. My only complaint is about its colour: BROWN!

Wi-Fi works well with good coverage for what it is and the device is ...
Wi-Fi works well with good coverage for what it is and the device is well built with decent storage, however, where this device fails is the utterly worthless software used to access or support syncing and organizing files. No batch file uploads or processing and search functionality is broken. If they could fix the software to support the way people actually work with media files, it would be a slam dunk 5 stars. I had to manually copy all files over to the hard drive and not all of them were properly recognized and catalogued properly when I opened the browser.

Highly unstable and prone to crashing
I love the IDEA of this product: a portable, 1TB hard drive that can connect wirelessly with computers, tablets and other mobile devices using its own local WIFI connection. Very cool. It initially worked quite well, but I've found that it is susceptible to crashing when copying material on to the hard drive using the USB. I managed to recover most of the files the first time, but now, the WIFI and USB connections are no longer working. Perhaps this needs to go back to the drawing board for more refinement? I'm hoping that Amazon will give me a refund.
