Good if you want essential information, great if you're trying to produce an eventer.
I had no idea what to expect, when I took on a 4 year old pony. So far, this book has been both helpful and right. Although ... I am probably not going to produce a top-notch eventer, so some of the information in here is probably too ambitious for me, but I am happy I bought this book.

Clearly laid out
Very much geared to (and worth a read for) the very young horse, age 2/3/4 looking to compete. I was looking fo a flatwork schooling book for my green 5 year old. This is not what I was looking for but an interesting book, with good advice on gently bringing out the best in a very young horse. The book is easy to follow and thorough, though focuses a lot on jumping and cross country fences, rather than on flatwork.

Excellent, easy to follow book on training the young horse.
This book is one of the best training books i have read.It follows european champion and olympic silver medallist at her best bringing on the young horse from its first work under the saddle to its first competition all the way through to its 3 and 4 star events. You get to know all of her horses and most of her training regimes. It will help any person who is thinking of bringing on a youngster in tremendous ways. A pleasure to read.

Not the best for young horses
Although I give credit to Pippa Funnell for all that she's done over the years for the sport and for owners, I dont think this book will help you unless you are looking to school and train a horse that you wish to EVENT on.I bought it in the hope it might give me some tips on training and handling, and more importantly, forming a bond with my new green 5 year old shire but it doesnt. It gives you the basics of lungeing but then goes onto eventing and preparing for dressage and cross country. Great if thats what you want but dont waste your money if you dont.Seems like a good marketing tool of hers to me.

Highly Recommended
I highly respect Pippa Funnel, and this book is just wonderful. I have a young horse that I'm schooling and it helped me to understand just how important the basics are for a young horse, and how to go about introducing them to certain things. I especially found the jumping section very helpful. This book has big, glossy colour pictures throughout, and very easy to understand instructions which explain how to go about each new schooling exercise. It also shows what not to do, which is why I gave this book 4 stars and not 3. Showing what's wrong and the outcome of what could happen if approached wrong really sold this book to me, because there are many books out there which tell you what to do, but not how to recover when anything goes wrong.
