How do you clean the cleaning stick itself?

You don't "clean" the stick. It wears down as you clean the sandpaper just as a pencil eraser does as it is used to erase pencil marks. Eventually, the sandpaper cleaner is reduced to a nub, at which point you Larry Bird that thing into your trash bin and then unwrap the new one you just received from Amazon.

Does it leave any oily residue that would resist water-Bourne paint ?
