History of mixed marriage and offsprings !! Hi
The most interesting of all books on lord Roberts. I especially like the paragraphs on mixed marriages. We have a family history of my grandfather's mother bring in service for the Roberts and fell pregnant twice. Probably by someone with a bit of colour in the skin, which now has come out in my family. !I.e. my mother, black hair and tanned skin. She had four children, one being practically Indian! He had two children, one of which has the same colouring. We others are all normal. Interesting....grandfather's mother had the children and were in the Workhouse in Boston. Lincs, where they were born. Just a bit of information. No proof, but it is a good talking point. I would like to know more, but can't follow it up,as I don't have anymore knowledge of the story. I am 82 now and it has always been a mystery in the family.

Some effort needed to keep reading but well worth it!
A riviting read - so amazing and of course some issues are the reason for things happening now around the world.... At times it was hard going a bit more demaniding than a simple thriller. But sometimes that's more stimulating to the reader.Packed with famous names from Victorian times and events that we may have heard of but put into context. The British parlaiment & politicians are just as daft and back stabby as now as they were back then. Sending troops out to do their dirty work without the right tools very often.. or sometime badly led.A great book!

An Inspirational Military Commander
Rodney Atwood's biography of Field Marshal Lord Roberts (Bobs as he was affectionately known) gives afresh insight into the extraordinary life of a great military figure of the Victorian & Edwardian age. Often a controversial figure this book follows his career in India, Afghanistan, Burma and South Africa and finally as head of the Army before the First World War.Meticulously researched, this is not a light read but for those interested in the British Army at the height of the Empire it is a fascinating story. The book explores Bob's true character, his strengths and weakness and how in so many of his ideas he was way ahead of his time. Together with his wife he championed female nurses in India and the South Africa leading to the formation of QAIMNS by WW1.He warned before the Great War of the dangerous rise of German Militarism; wanted to introduce National Service and introduced long lasting Army reform. Though small in stature, a towering figure of the Empire and an inspirational military commander. He died in France in 1915, long after retirement, where he gave encouragement to the troops of the First World War especially those from India. This is an excellent and enthralling re-evaluation of the life of Field Marshal Lord Roberts.

Interesting and informative.
A really interesting read. A whole new view of some major historical events. Some events were glossed over it omitted, however that itself tells a story. Worth a read.
