Bleeding Chunks of Dreams
I would have to agree with the other reviewers here. This is a disappointing CD. I still have my first Virgin Dream albums but no turntable. I was hoping this CD would bring back some of the magic that I found when I first heard TD's music. Unfortunately, that's not the case.I fall into the early Dream camp, liking the long extended trippy music much more than the more commercially viable later music. While some of the best of that is sampled here, it is just sampled, and not very well at that. The first cut, Genesis doesn't even have a good edit point. It just ends abrubtly and jarringly, without the grace of even a good fade. And the selection of material is mediocre at best...sounding more like New Age fodder than the coloristic sound collages that I loved from this period. All in all, Zeit is a better introduction to this period of Tangerine Dream. And I still count Phaedra and Rubycon as my favorite synthesizer albums. Dream just doesn't respond well to cutting up. Better to invest in one or two original Cds.

A Major Dissapointment
Tangerine Dream's early years were deeply innovative and incredibly atmosperic, and as a group they practically invented the Ambient movement before anyone had ever heard of the word. This could have been a great opportunity to showcase this dark and beautiful period, but instead it contains most of the WORST bits of thier early cannon. In addition, one of the strengths of thier early works was thier ability to make 20-25 minute pieces develope and flow over time, and most of the pieces on this album are brief 5 minute excerpts. And the last three pieces are all from "Green Desert," which good as it was, didn't need to take up almost half the album. Finally, why call it "The Pink Years?" These years were DARK. Deeply atmospheric, moody, and ambient. If you want truly the best of Tangerine Dreams early years, the two CD set "Zeit" is the answer.

A very poor collection!
There are endless numbers of 'Best of Tangerine Dream' collections; selecting between them is often difficult and invariably confusing. It is not helped by the fact that the band has been contracted to so many different record companies over the years. Each label naturally feels it necessary to keep repackaging THEIR material as the best! Castle Communications/Essential Music has the rights to the band's output during two of their main periods: the "Pink Years" refers to their early 1970's pre-Virgin era, and covers the albums "Electronic Meditation", "Alpha Centauri", "Zeit", "Atem" and "Green Desert". The "Blue Years" covers the band's output immediately after their period with Virgin Records, when they signed with the now-defunct Jive Electro label. The "Best of Tangerine Dream: Pink Years" collection consists of bleeding chunks from two of these 5 albums (the title track from "Atem" and 'Nebulous Dawn' from "Zeit") and sample tracks from the other 3, with "Green Desert" getting the most coverage, with 'White Clouds', 'Indian Summer' and 'Astral Voyage'. This is an unsatisfying collection: if all you want is a sample of Tangerine Dream's early "Pink Years", you'd be better off buying "Tangerine Dream: The Collection Vol I", which contains a much better selection, has no excerpted tracks and features a generous running time. Or better still, buy "Three Classic Albums" and grab the whole of the first three albums at a bargain price.

A less-than-brilliant 'best of' release
This is a reasonable survey of Tangerine Dream's albums "Le Parc" and "Underwater Sunlight", with some chunks of "Poland", "Tyger" and "Livemiles" thrown in. It doesn't contain enough of any of these albums to be worth having, though, nor is it sufficiently representative (especially of "Poland" or "Tyger") to be a useful way of finding out whether or not the full albums are worth having! Personally, I'd recommend putting the money towards copies of "Livemiles" and "Poland", if you don't have those. Or, if you're interested in the "Tyger", "Le Parc" and "Underwater Sunlight" tracks, go for the 5-CD "Dream Roots Collection" instead. It is more expensive, obviously, but it has a better mix of tracks than here, (from the same albums) and has some otherwise unavailable tracks on it too.

You will like it if you are a fan of 80s TD
Tangerine Dream in the mid to late 80s lost a lot of the innovation and creativity that drove their best work. However it is is still good material and enjoyable. Green desert was supposedly recorded in the early 70s but has been reimagined with 80s technology. Very little of of it sounds of the 70s but it’s pleasant.
