Family ties
The reviewers are right: This is a splendid film. The acting is extraordinarily good, as is the directing and cinematography. The re-creation of America through the late 1940s and into the early 1950s is painstakingly accurate. Still, one comes away from this very long film with little. The reason lies in the script. How do wholly secular Jewish family members interact with each other? Levinson's answer: They scream at each other constantly. If you enjoy seemingly endless bickering, hollering, and nastiness, this is the film for you. Despite the ads, the move contains virtually no humor, and there is little to feel good about when the credits appear. Real? Yes. Entertaining? Perhaps, but it helps to be a masochist. There are three errors in the film involving music. The first is a scene where the hero is playing a violin. The fingers on his left hand don't move. Then there is the older man playing the piano, and his hand movement doesn't appear to match what one hears. In a nightclub scene, a handful of musicians produce a big band sound that had to be recorded by a much larger group. How could the director be blind to such blatant mistakes, since he is so meticulous elsewhere? Well, the film is worth seeing anyway. But only once.

For 30 years has been a favorite.
This film is a beautiful story about what true family means. It also gives insights into how television has become a cheap substitute for companionship and love.

Great "slice of life" story
I can't say that I "love" Avalon, but it certainly impresses me, and is good sober reflection on several levels.First, it is a commentary generally on America in the "baby boomer" generation years; because it shows how TV changed the dynamics of how families relate to each other at home. I hate TV, and Avalon is right there with me.Second, it shows how Americans come from great familes who emigrate here. The generation "gap" that inevitably springs up between the emigrant father and his children is sad but understandable. The part of the story which shows how "free enterprise" doesn't always work out is also sad but so true.Aging and death are very prominent themes in this story. And today, with my own father encountering the effects of old age, I really emote with the way the family deals with the father's / grandfather's dotage. This is sad as well, but also there is this comforting quality to the way the story ends: and I feel like I am definitely with everyone else in having to go through this with my father and mother.(A fun feature, after the fact of The Lord of the Rings, is seeing a very young Elijah Wood as the grandson.)

Had to own it!
I love this film. My grandparents came here from Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. In the movie my parents would have been the young adults and I would have been one of the kids. I remember scenes like this throughout my childhood. Avalon brings it all back. We even had a movie theatre back in Detroit in our completely Jewish Neighborhood called "Avalon". After seeing Avalon in a theatre my brother (six years older than me) would announce ad nausea "You cut the turkey without me!" How many family "Incidence" happen during a gathering for a holiday! This film recreates those scenes with emotional accuracy as well as others that show the bravery and struggles of the new Americans that fled from the Bulshivick (SP?) revolution. It was a time of struggle that was real and creative in order to survive. Highly recommended!

AVALON dvd
I was recommended by a friend that this film was excellent. Yes, it was good as a story and true to life in many respects but not excellent. Pleasant and absorbing viewing for a rainy evening.

Don't bother.
Viewing this DVD is like being forced to watch someone else's home movies. Dull and uninteresting.
