My son was an avid thumb sucker and despite my best efforts and every thing I could think of, we couldn't break him of it. We bought this and it didn't seem to work for the first couple week and I thought this was another failed device/attempt. But don't give up, after the first 3-4 weeks, my stubborn son stopped fighting this brace and it started working. We are now 2.5 months after the first night using it, and he is no longer a thumb sucker without needing the brace any longer. This works, but it is not an overnight fix. Just hang in there and if you have tried everything else and nothing has worked for your child, take the risk and give this a try. My son was an avid thumb sucker, like super attached to thumb sucking at night. We had made progress getting him to stop during the day, but when he was tired, the thumb went in his mouth without fail and regardless of anything else we tried. We tried the bad tasting nail polish, rewards, punishments, tape/band-aids, books, literally anything else we could think of before a guard or elbow brace. We bought this as a literal last hope to finally break the habit because we had exhausted everything else. We debated between this or a thumb guard, but we ultimately landed on this because we thought it would be overall more comfortable for wearing overnight. Pros: 1. Our son (4.5yrs old) was not able to remove it himself for a while (and they do provide zip ties to provide further securing if needed). The velcro is strong, so if using on a younger child, they will likely struggle to remove this. 2. It appears to be comfortable. My son never complained that it hurt and it never left any marks or anything on his arm. 3. It does make it difficult for the child to get their fingers to their face, but not impossible. Cons: 1. A determined child can "slide" the brace up or down slightly enough to be able to more comfortably get their thumb in their mouth. This is what our son did for a week or so. I doubt that it was very comfortable though, because he stopped this behavior on his own, and I didn't want to make it tighter for obvious reasons. 2. After 2.5 months of nightly use, it is starting to show some wear around the edges (some slight fraying of the threads/seams/edges/etc.) but so far nothing that would compromise the function of the brace. So far nothing around the velcro straps, but the velcro on the body of the brace has gotten weaker. 3. The price point. I only put this on the con list because this was the main barrier to me buying this sooner than I did. I felt that price was a big risk especially after everything else had failed spectacularly for my son. However, now that I am on the other end and it has worked, it is worth every penny. Overall, this definitely works, but it is not an immediate fix. It took about a month before he stopped fighting it. I had lost hope that this would work. We actually ended up using this combined with the bad tasting nail polish that we had leftover from previous failed attempts (and discussions and rewards). After he stopped fighting it, it was another couple weeks before he started asking to wear it so he wouldn't suck his thumb in his sleep. And finally he was afraid to sleep without it because he thought he would start sucking his thumb again. We are now 2.5 months out from starting this and we've been sleeping without it for a few days and he is still not sucking his thumb.
