not the same as the book, but a very good movie
I've read both the novel and the abridged children's version, and still I enjoy this movie. So beautifully filmed. The magnificent setting gives glory to God. The story here teaches the virtues of friendship, honor, hard work.

Grandpabob
I have always loved this movie. I thought I had it on VHS or laserdisc but I was remiss. I am currently in the process of introducing my 11 year old grandson to the fine art of enjoying movies on several levels. He is beginning to understand that there is much more to a good movie than special effects, car chases, and large explosions. He now appreciates a good storyline and acting more than the typical eye candy that accompanies most big budget efforts cranked out by Hollywood these days. Our current focus is presently on movies where animals play a significant role. After watching "Eight Below", "Seabiscuit", "Secretariat", "The Edge", and "The Ghost and the Darkness", he was hooked. He wanted to see all my movies where animals had meaty roles, where the storyline was based on or influenced by actual events, and anything where Bart (the bear) appeared (even if just a cameo). My immediate response to his request was; let's watch "White Fang" and "Iron Will". One has Bart the Bear and the other is based on true events. Right up his alley. So we searched through my VHS Tapes (approx 1000), my laserdiscs (approx 500) and my DVDs (approx 3000). I could not believe it. They were not in my collection. Without hesitation, we logged onto Amazon.com, ordered the DVDs, and were watching them 2 days later. Being an Amazon Prime member is awesome, shipping is free and fast. Well worth the annual membership fee. Back to "White Fang": my only comment is: "where is the widescreen version of the film?" A movie this good, with numerous fine learning opportunities for a young inquisitive mind regarding human behaviors and mores' needs a new release, most definitely in Blue ray. Other than that I was 100% satisfied with my purchase.

Excellent movie of the Klondike gold rush era
Excellent movie with Ethan Hawk; However, it is a work of fiction by Jack London. If you like this movie I would also recommend reading the following true accounts of dogs of the North:1. The Wild Northland, Being the Story of a Winter Journey: With Dogs, Across Northern North America 2. Dogs of the American Aborigines (1920) 3. By Eskimo Dog-sled and Kayak (1919) 4. A Winter Circuit of Our Arctic Coast: A Narrative of a Journey with Dog-sleds Around the Entire Arctic Coast of Alaska (1920) 5. The Sledge Dogs of the North (1901) If it is the Yukon gold part of the story you like in this movie, I would recommend reading the following true accounts of the Klondike:1. B00LYIG8Y4 Three Years in the Klondike 2. Two Women in the Klondike: The Story of a Journey to the Gold Field of Alaska 3. Two Years in the Klondike and Alaskan Gold-fields (1898): A Thrilling Narrative of Personal Experiences and Adventures in the Wonderful Gold Regions of Alaska And the Klondike 4. The Klondike Stampede (1899) 5. The Pioneers of the Klondyke: Being an Account of Two Years Police Service on the Yukon

Not for young kids or long trips in the car
While this was a really good movie, it didn't hold the attention of my 10 and 13 yr old. I thought it would be a great (and cheap) addition to our DVD collection that we use for road trips. We watched it at home and the comments from my teenage critic were, "When is this movie ever going to end?" The action is very slow.Yes, it's a good movie but it would have been just as good watched on the Disney channel. There are scenes that will frighten young children and may give some adults nightmares. Near the begining of the film, a blue-faced corpse (hugging his dead dog) rolls out of his coffin down a snow-covered hill then slides along a frozen pond. As the main character tries to walk across the pond to retrieve the dead man's belongings, the ice cracks and both the boy and dead man are in the water. This movie is geared for such a small audience...mature teens/adults who have an appreciation for the great outdoors.

Family entertainment.
An enjoyable Disney adventure story. The scenery is breathtaking. It tells the story of a young man who has been left a "claim" by his recently deceased father, in the Klondike. It tells the story of his struggle against the weather, the country and a whole host of foes including robbers and wolves. It also tells the story of a half dog half wolf puppy and it's struggle to survive following the death of it's mother. The young man and the puppy meet up and form an intense bond. This film tells their story.Good family entertainment.

Lovely scenery
I've never read Jack London's book, but it's certainly on my wishlist. And after seeing this film I think I might finally get around to buying it.Ethan Hawke plays Jack Conroy a young gold prospector in Canada/Alaska during the gold rush of the late 19th century. His story is without considerable peril and seems to take a backseat to the more intimate story of a young wolf cub who loses his mother and ventures out into the world on his own. Many people (kind, cruel and indifferent) interact and encounter the wolf before Jack adopts him as "White Fang".The scenes of the cub hugging his dying mother are heartbreaking, and the training the filmmakers did with the animals is really impressive. A disclaimer pops up before the film begins to explain that although all the animal cruelty looks realistic is was done safely. The scenery is wonderful, but I am puzzled as to why director Randall Kleiser didn't shoot it in anamorphic Panavision. When filming in breathtaking parts of the world it's kinda dumb to not take full advantage. The resulting picture looks a bit TV-ish. But it's a minor quibble.Basil Poledouris' score is also great. I am convinced Hans Zimmer might have also contributed as there are a couple of tracks that have the early 90s Zimmer sound. But it's definitely Poledouris' show, and it's a shame that a definitive score CD was never released. For those of you who love wolf, adventure and great outdoors movies, this one is a must.

Life Is An Adventure
Very entertaining film. The young hero was a fine model for youth to follow. The sound quality and technology of the film was excellent. The photography was wonderful. The film had a interesting storyline. I was satisfied enough to research the web on the life of Jack London on Wikipedia.I gathered that Jack London excelled in his short story writing and was master of this genre. He was a vital man who loved adventure andnature and this is reflected in his work. He said of his lifestyle that he would "rather be ashes than dust".

Great story
I read the book many years ago and the film is almost was as good as the book. I love films where an animal saves its saviours life and this film does just that. Nice story and well worth watching.
