Excellent read!
From choosing your mate, to how to keep the spark alive after years of marriage, this book is chock-full of valuable advice! This book is gold for people who want to know if he/she is THE ONE. However, this book is so much more! If you're already married, you can skip the parts of the first chapter that talk about choosing your mate, but please still read lessons four (You're Marrying a Family) and five (Three Warning Signs). They are still relevant. You might have figured it out already, but you will have to deal with your mate's family (like it or not) especially if/when children come into the picture. Plus, everyone should be aware of the warning signs no matter the stage they're in the relationship. The stories from the experts or elders are just so refreshing and insightful! And yes, old people STILL have active sex lives! LOL They talk about love, loss, and even about a couple who divorced and later remarried after what seems like a lifetime to me.I will recommend this book to every couple I know, from now on!P.S. I LOVED the analogies he used about the deflector shield and decontamination chamber! For those who don't know what I'm talking about, these are Star Trek references. The Trekkie in me was so excited to understand what he was talking about!P.P.S. Live long and prosper. *in a neutral, unemotional, Vulcan tone* Who am I kidding?! This book brought all the feels and even made me cry!

Good Info, wish there were more stories
There is a lot of great info in this book but in honesty it felt more like a textbook read than a cohesive story. I liked hearing what the older individuals had to say but sometimes I think more context would’ve made the read easier. A lot of great info I’ll take with me though so I’m glad I read it.

Best of its kind on the subject
This is the best book I have read of its kind on this topic because it is simple and real advice from actual people who have been in long term relationships. Nothing is sugar coated and there are no quick fixes. Most of it is anecdotal and it is such a treat to read the accounts of the elders who the author interviewed. I am 51 years old and it has taken me a divorce and many failed relationships to learn many of these principles on my own. Yet, once again, I am in another unhappy relationship because HE doesn't grasp any of the concepts in this book. I have tried to "teach" him on my own, which lead to me questioning my own sanity and thinking that maybe I was wrong. But after reading this book, not only am I vindicated but I've also been given new insight into other relationship behaviors that I will definitely cherish for the rest of my life whether I remain single or meet someone. Truly inspiring and touching. I don't want to sound dramatic, but this book was life changing for me.

Not Helpful when Dating in the 21st century
I read the first 50 pages and had to put it down. The only part of the book that I found somewhat helpful is saying that marrying someone is like rolling a dice, no matter what, you never really know. I wouldn't suggest this to any of my single female friends because it doesn't offer advice that we haven't already heard from our parents, grandparents and the media. It was information collected before relationships were liquid and online, not helpful for those who are dating, which is what I thought it would do. No where near the wisdom like Esther Perel offers so I guess maybe it's my fault for having high expectations. Maybe it could be helpful to people who are already married, but then, what's the point?

I feel these experts have given me a compass to help me go possibly into the direction I need to be going to possibly achieve live a fulfilling life in relationships.I bought this book twice. The best relationship advice book I have ever read
I first found about about Dr. Pillemer's book while listening to an interview on the radio. I purchased it because I was interested in reading about the life lessons he compiled from those who have learned how to navigate the rocky shoals of relationships. Much of the advice given in this book I had to learn through trial and error. Retrospectively, I wish I would have had access to this advice in my teenage years so that I could observe how it works in the relations of those in my life at that time. I intentionally purchased this book in a hardbound format so that I could more easily share it with others in my life. I likely will purchase more copies to give as gifts.

A must read for anyone who wants a long term relationship
This book definitely helped put a lot in perspective. In my culture we value our grandparents' experiences but by the time I needed to ask for marriage advice, they had already passed away. But this advice is very important and I wish I had read it sooner. It's also such an easy read - I really enjoyed reading it.
