Freshwater Cultured PearlsThese pearls are gathered from freshwater lake and river mollusks. Most Freshwater pearls come from China and they can be mostly round to off-round, or rice-shaped to baroque. They look similar to Akoya pearls, but are the perfect gift when on a budget. They might be slightly less symmetrical, smaller, or not as easily matched, but these minor differences provide a major value for the price.CultivationPearls are produced naturally in the body of salt and freshwater mollusks, such as oysters and mussels. When these animals sense an irritant, such as a grain of sand, they produce a soft coating of calcium carbonate substance around it. The result is a pearl. Because perfectly round, naturally produced pearls are so rare, a process known as cultivation was developed by Kokichi Mikimoto in the early 1900s. A small bead of polished shell, the nucleus, is used as an irritant and delicately inserted into the mantle of a mollusk. It takes approximately 20-24 months of intensive husbandry to cultivate a saltwater pearl and somewhat less time to cultivate freshwater pearls. The harvest usually takes place during the months of June and September.ColorMollusks produce pearls in a variety of colors, accommodating most personal preferences and budgets. The general color of a pearl is also known as the body color. Pearls typically range from white, cream, and yellow to pink, silver, or black. An overtone of secondary color is sometimes seen. For instance, a pearl may appear to be white, but upon closer inspection a rosy hue is detected. The body color would then be termed white-rosé. Color variation does not affect the quality of the pearl, though it should be noted that color matching is important when choosing pearls for some necklaces, earrings, or bracelets. In fashion jewelry, pearls can sometimes be dyed to achieve the desired color, which should be mentioned in the product description or specifications.LustreThe appealing, deep shine of a pearl is often what defines its beauty. This shine is produced by multiple layers of semi-opaque calcium carbonate crystals, called nacre. The nacre reflects light on the surface of the pearl, producing brilliance and sheen. Lustre is an integral feature in determining the quality of a pearl. Large pearls have a thicker nacre and, therefore, a higher lustre. When comparing a small Freshwater pearl to a large South Sea pearl, the difference is clearly visible to the untrained eye and should be considered when purchasing pearls.ShapeWhile pearls come in many different shapes, the rarest and highest-quality are round. Akoya, Tahitian, and South Sea oysters tend to produce the roundest pearls, while those of Freshwater mollusks can be oval to slightly off-round. When considering a pearl purchase, whether it be a necklace, bracelet, or earrings, look for consistency in the shapes of the pearls. Many of the less symmetrical shapes are used in stylish jewelry which can be quite beautiful: the drop pearl's shape lends well to earrings, and the baroque pearl features irregular shapes that work well as necklace accents. In addition, a half sphere pearl called a "mabe" is often used in earrings, necklaces, and bracelets.SizeAn oyster's particular type and size has a direct effect on how large the pearl it produces will be, and pearls do come in a wide range of sizes. Round pearls are measured according to their diameter, while baroque pearls are measured by their length and width. A pearl's size does not necessarily affect its quality, but it does affect its price. Large, round pearls are rare and their lustre is usually high--this beautiful combination of traits is often reflected in the cost of such pearls.Average pearl sizes (in diameter):Akoya: 6-8mmFreshwater: 5-6.5mmSouth Sea: 11-13mmTahitian: 11-12mmKeshi: 4-10mmSurface MarkingsOften when an oyster creates a pearl, the nacre does not develop smoothly. The surface of a pearl is judged by how many marks are visible in the nacre. These imperfections can be small and unnoticeable or quite large and distinct. Like diamonds, pearls are rarely flawless. However, high lustre or the way pearls are strung and set can help conceal surface markings.CareProper care of pearls is not difficult if you remember that they are organic and produced by a living thing. Pearls are soft and delicate, but when cared for with common sense, they will maintain their lustre for centuries. The pearls should not come in contact with cosmetics, hairspray, perfume, chlorinated water, or other harsh chemicals. To keep them clean, let them be the last item put on when dressing, and the first item taken off at the end of an evening. The best way to maintain their lustre is to wear the pearls often, and wipe them down with a soft cloth afterward--pearls absorb the oils from skin, which helps keep them moist. Pearls should be stored in a cloth pouch or jewelry bag, separated from other jewelry to prevent nicks or chipping. Periodically, pearl strands should be restrung since the silk thread used to tie the pearls together breaks down over time.

Beautiful earrings and they come in one of the black ...
Beautiful earrings and they come in one of the black amazon boxed (not some cheap cardboard box I've gotten from other retailers). The black box makes them look so much more expensive if you want to use them as a gift. Luster is obviously not at the same level as Akoyas, but it fine and meets the description. Some people have complained that they aren't round or that they are cut. These are not cut pearls, but they are button pearls. Button pearls are chosen specifically for earrings because of their flat back and how it fits better with the post. This does not mean they are poor quality. It is simply a different shape of pearl. In my opinion, button pearls look better in studs because they lie closer to the ear compared to round pearls. If you are confused to the difference between button and round pearls, I highly recommend a quick google search/image search. These pearls hold up well, but I would recommend getting some cheap silicone backs as they hold better and are more comfortable, especially for people with sensitive ears. Many stores like walmart/target sell the backs for a couple bucks for a pack of like 50. When I purchased these earrings they were about $13 and I plan on buying more as long as the price doesn't skyrocket.

Cute, Classic, Tremendously GREAT Buy!!
UPDATE: I've changed my 5 star review to 2 stars. 07/2022 : I ordered these as a gift and they arrived in a clear plastic bag with NO BOX, no packaging, no brand or card or anything. It looks completely cheap and I am really embarrassed! The listing clearly says the earrings will come in a jewelry box, but this is a LIE. Save yourself the humiliation and DO NOT ORDER THESE unless you have a jewelry gift box you can put them in for gifting. I had these shipped directly to my niece, so I didn't see them until she opened the gift. This was a COMPLETELY HORRIBLE experience.***** Old, Former Review below:Buy these earrings!! As soon as they arrive you will be so glad you did!I am beyond thrilled with these earrings! The earrings are excellent quality, substantial size, and the "button" shape of the pearl gives that perfect something extra ...transforming a classic look with a fresh and stylish twist! These earrings are classic and sexy in the same coy style that Marilyn or Jackie captured. I am a 30 year old female and unlike other pearl earrings, which can feel stale, I wear these both in the office and for going out on the town. These earrings are young, fresh and sophisticated. The earrings arrived in a nice navy blue box with a blue felt jewelry bag. The presentation and the product both have the appearance and quality of a MUCH more expensive product. If I had known what a great product this is, I would have bought these earrings for every woman on my holiday shopping list! They look like they cost a fortune...but, the price is a steal!

Good for the price
These are okay pearl studs, I feel they are good for the price. Both the pearls are similar in color and size. If I was going to be super nit-picky one is a little darker and smaller than the other. However, that being said, it is only noticeable if you are intensely staring at them side by side looking flaws. Once on the ears, they look great. I don't know if I would purchase from the Amazon curated collection again, unless I needed something like costume jewelry, however I will say their packaging for these earrings was excellent. Comparable to a nice jewelery store. These would make excellent gifts for bridesmaids or a young girl.

Best Button Pearl Ever!
LOVE THEM! I bought a pair for myself and ended up buying 8 more as gifts and everyone loves them! The size is perfect and very flattering on everyone, earlobes large and small. The button aspect allows the pearl to rest flat on the ear while still looking like a rounded pearl and, in my book, these pearls would qualify as "large". The color is also beautiful, more of an antique white, which I prefer. What a wonderful find these earrings were! The gift recipient's ages ranged from 18 to 74 and the pearls were a huge hit with everyone. Pearls, I feel, are a very personal gift, and I was honored to be able to share them with so many people due to the low cost. Thank you Amazon for making this part of Christmas and "Just Because" gifting such a breeze. I WILL buy more, of that I am certain!

Pretty but Broke After Second Wearing
These actually are not as pink as they appear in the picture. Mine were much paler and almost a pinkish cream color. They are a nice size and certainly fine for what I wanted even though I hoped for a darker pink. However, I have only worn these TWICE and as I sat at my desk at work, I noticed a pink ball sitting by the keyboard. One of the pearls had completely fallen off leaving only the metal post in my ear. Fortunately it at least fell where I could find it and I guess I will find a way to glue it back on. The fact that I found the pearl is the reason I'm giving it three stars. Granted, they weren't expensive but I would expect to at least have longer than two wearings before having a problem.

Pretty, but not black
These earring were very pretty, but also very purple with a lot of luster. I had a gorgeous pair of black akoya pearls for which I was tring to replace after losing one. I was hoping for more of a gunmetal grey with a medium luster. These earrings were very pretty, but they do look like dyed freshwater pearls. If that is what you are looking for, then I highly recommend them, however they do not look like a good quality black pearl.

Very Nice!
The Pearls look spectacular! they are a slight oval shape to them, and the dimensions posted by amazon are exact. I have previously ordered jewelry from amazon, it comes in a clamshell case. This one came in a nice black box, very modern looking and presentable. The clasps on the back are the standard earring ones and seem to do the trick. Overall very nice!

Cute!
These earrings are very nice. They are nicer than I expected. Mine kind of look like blueberries. The only thing I want impressed with was the packaging (the box.)

Two different shapes of pearls. One is a squashed round shape, more button than round. The other has a flat back. About 1mm size difference as well. For the price, these are too dissimilar from one another and going back. Also came in a Ziploc bag, no box or any such.
