Could be smoke & mirrors but does it work? YES
look I’m not a scientist not a lawn expert but I can spot a great, green lawn from a mile away & since using this product my lawn (really the soil underneath) significantly. I have a hybrid Bermuda lawn in North Texas & apply this product as often as I can afford (a bit pricy) usually 4 - 6 heavy applications per year for the last 3 years. you will not get an instant green like a nitrogen fertilizer, you actually might not notice much until a couple of applications but the first thing I noticed was how dark brown the dirty underneath was getting (North Texas has a very heavy clay soil, no top soil was added to the new build & we get very little rainfall so the ground is normally hard and grey). I attribute the deep, dense, green grass growth after to the quality of the soil. There is a visible line in the soil level where my yard ends & my neighbors begins. What this product does, I don’t know, I lay it down heavy, water it in, pray for rain & green grass grows! Disclaimer : I used this product in conjunction with other products throughout the year, I don’t know what it would do on its own.

Great stuff, but an issue with charging?
Biochar is a great soil amendment, but it's basically a sponge so it needs to be charged or it will drain nutrients from the turf for the first year or so. One reviewer here was (correctly) concerned with this so I contacted The Andersons. They kindly replied that the product was charged. Maybe they meant it was charged to my debit card, because after applying to my lawn at the labelled rates, I noticed the grass slowly turned slightly yellow and the growth was stunted. After another few days I applied Scott's Green Max and watered that in with fish fertilizer and liquid kelp. Now, the grass is back to green and looks great. This (and biochar in general) is great stuff but use knowing that it may require you to return some nutrients to the turf after application. It will improve your soil over the long term, though.

Pretty sure this is good stuff...
I applied this with a bag of PGF Complete 10-10-10 initially. And then followed up with another bag of PGF a month later. And in combination, they brought my lawn back from critical condition. So pretty happy with that.

Good First Impression
This was my first experience with The Andersons products. Received this yesterday and immediately put in on the lawn in advance of some upcoming rain. Was very pleasantly surprised at how little dust it had and how well it spread. I've used other products that really gummed up the spreader, but this stuff almost scrubbed the spreader, and cleanup was minimal. Well done, Andersons, on the making a product that spreads so well. It's too early to tell how much this helps my soil and it's very expensive, but the initial impression was very good. The only minor nits to pick are that UPS significantly damaged the box (completely tore a section) for one of the bags but the bag was fortunately intact, and that it took a day and a half for the shipment to be picked up once the "label was printed".

great product.
very uniform. spreads amazing for lawn. good value compared to other bio char. for garden use compost first.. if spreading around trees or shrubs you will need extra nitrogen. after composting, dont let it dry out to much. i smelled some ammonia evaporating. i was planning on letting it dry completely to spread but i think im losing the nitrogen. its a great product to play around with. compost with other fine materials like flour or animal feed for a very fine finished product. it didnt absorb all that fishy smell from that 5-1-1 stuff.i even found some other uses for this stuff. works great as a kitty litter additive.

Not for potted plants
I purchased this for use with container grown potted trees. Mixed into my ( fast draining) potting mix at 5% by volume. Mixed easily with low dust. However the grains of BioChar quickly disintergrated and started to wash right through the pots - leaving a mess and black stain on the patio. This fast break down may be and advantage when BioChar is spread on the surface of a lawn or garden soil. But I do not recommend incorporating directly into a potting mixture.
