The Art of DreamWorks Turbo

Surprisingly good
The media could not be loaded. I wasn't expecting much from an art book based on a movie whose main character is a snail. Surprisingly, the art book is quite good. Dreamworks is the company putting out the film Turbo after all.The snails' character designs are cute. The artists have removed the slime and drawn them in different colours and shapes. They have lots of interesting shells too. The best and funny ones are from the racing snails who have racing engine shells. Glossy shells with exhaust pipes that discharge flames. Another one carries around a dead bumble bee. Nice. There are a few simple human character designs as well. Character designers are Shannon Tindle, Sylvian Deboissy, Takao Noguchi among others. The scene paintings are beautiful. The composition and the colours are really nice. Some of them are painted by Dominique R. Louis and Mike Hernandez. They are great with light and colours. The storyboards from Macros Mateu-Mestre look fantastic. Just simple grayscale but effective storyboards with good composition that you can blow them up to any size and they will still look great.I love the Tacos shop designs also. While heavily stylised, they still look so believable like customers have been eating there for a long time. Then there are the designs for the race track and some of the F1-like racing cars. There's plenty of commentary from the staff, and a funny foreword by Ryan Renolds who presented himself as an animation noob in front of Jeffrey Katzenberg.Like I said, surprisingly good art book with a snail on the cover.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Misleading snail designs inspire alledged criminal activity
Having seen the movie "Turbo" in the theather a few weeks back, I was inspired to start my own local underground snail racing circuit here in (undisclosed location.)I picked up this book with the intention of using the various snail models as inspiration for my own fleet of racers. Many of the designs, although slightly over the top, are truly ingenious. For one of my garden snails, I used the parts from a model rocket and attached them to the shell. Although that snail did win the race, few of it's body parts were ever recovered from the crash site in the preschool playground at the Methodist church. It would of not been such a big deal had there not been any children there when the rocket flew into the playground and exploded. From that incident, we quickly drew the unwanted attention of local law enforcement.Gambling, drugs, prostitution, child endangermant and human trafficking were quickly brought to light. All of which lead to a criminal investigation and ultimately, the abrupt shut down of our short-lived racing circuit.Having to deal with so many unnecessary legal entanglements, I feel that this book is not well-suited for those with intentions to model similiar activities as glorified both in the movie and this book. For a book geared towards children, it has some serious detrimental adult ramifications if enacted.

The Art of Turbo
The media could not be loaded. With such titles as "Shrek", "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Kung Fu Panda", Dreamworks Animation has become known for their quality and their creativity. "Turbo" is no different -- I enjoyed the film, but I was most impressed by the quality of the animation and the design. The characters designs are incredible; in particular, the design of each snail reflects its personality. The environments are very detailed and the color palette of the film is extremely appealing. This book does a great job detailing the design process, with plenty of concept art and design sketches. Some of the sketches are black & white, while others are in full color. I love both, but in this case you really get a sense of just how important color is when it comes to defining a character as well as impacting the overall tone of the film. This is a must-own book for those looking to work in film or animation.

Incredible Visual Development
The Art of Turbo showcases Visual Development from some of my favorite artists working at DreamWorks Animation. Artists such as Marcos Mateu, Mike Issak, Mike Hernandez, Richard Daskas, and more. Dominique Louis's color work is second to none some of the best in the industry! If you looking for an amazing table top book filled with inspiration, look no further! The Art of Turbo delivers!

Super !
Ce n'est pas le meilleur des Dreamworks de par sa lenteur de rythme mais comme toujours un grand moment pour le côté technique et traitement de l'image par lesdits studios.
