Thoroughly enjoyed this book …the story was pretty basic and repetitious at times but that is what made it so good for improving one’s language skills …in this particular instance, mine for the language Spanish …I have been taking Spanish for years and years but somehow have not grasped being fully fluent …with Ollys books I am a lot closer to being where I want to be …thanks again it was very useful and entertaining.

I had to add this to my routine to get better at reading. Reading is important and surprisingly complicated. By the end, I was able to figure words by context - just like we do with our primary language.

My level of Spanish learning (advanced intermediate) is a little higher than the level of this story written in "101 Conversations", so it was not very challenging, although I did add a few words to my vocabulary. I think it would be an excellent opportunity for advanced beginners to work with spoken language.I purchased the nook because my listening skills (particularly Castillian) aren't as good as my reading skills. I am looking forward to being able to listen to the mystery-story-in-conversations when the audio book is available.As someone pointed out, the mystery story is a little far-fetched, but it was still entertaining enough that I read the story in 2 sittings. Enjoy it, and be sure to get the audio.

This book is part of collection by the author Olly Richards. They deal with German, French, Italian and of course this one in Spanish.This book is intended for those beginning to speak and listen to Spanish. None of the books are intended for those just beginning to study the target language. The author has another series called German Uncovered as well as other languages. Those books are also in story form but they do introduce grammar and considerable vocabulary in a very effective way.This book does not deal with grammar or word order directly. There are a few words of vocabulary at the end of each chapter but they are intended to help with understanding the story line not as a basis for understanding the language. I do not have much vocabulary in Spanish and am not able to get much benefit from it. But I do recognize the structure from the alternative books in the series in German and French that I purchased. That leads me to believe that this is another great work from a renowned, polyglot, language instructor.The other books I have in the series helped me immensely with those languages which is why I bought this one knowing it wasn't designed for people at my level in Spanish. The audio track that is now available for the French book when combined with the test is allowing me to advance beyond belief. You just naturally pick up vocab and sounds of the language in conversation.The story line is that of mystery which while simple, is compelling enough to draw one into reading more to see what happens. Naturally, there is a tendency to want to go back over previous material to make sure you got details right about the unfolding story.As I said, I don't have enough Spanish to really get much out of the book yet. But I have enough Spanish in me to identify the structure, story line and conversational style to know that this book will move you up to a much higher level of reading and listening to Spanish. I bought it sight unseen because the other two books in their respective languages that I have, did exactly that.

I am a student of Olly Richards and own a bunch of his Spanish courses, all of which have been very helpful. I enjoyed this book a great deal and it held my attention even though it was below my level...even with that being said, I did pick up some new vocabulary, and more understanding of use of certain tenses, etc. Because the story was so interesting, I read it all in one sittiing. Olly has a great way of writing compelling story lines, and this one is no different. This will help you understand Spanish better, especially if you read it a few times. And I'm very glad to hear he is working on the audio version as well! Great job, Olly!

Short chapters, each with helpful vocabulary tips, made it possible for this novice in Spanish to read and comprehend the engaging story. The author sets each chapter up with a brief snippet (in Spanish) to guide understanding. The vocabulary is not so advanced that it's frustrating, and not so basic that it feels juvenile. The characters and plot are realistic and interesting. I recommend this mystery to people trying to gain momentum in their learning of Spanish. It was a fun challenge!

A good way to learn how to put conversations together. This book is simple enough for a beginner and uses vocabulary in a way that helps you incorporate it into your own conversations. I find it to be a practical way to learn a language. Definitely need an audio with a native speaker at normal speed to help automatically assimilate the language in my mind and to be able to learn to speak and understand Spanish in a more natural way.

This was my first book in Spanish other than language learning textbooks. It was slightly above my level. I didn't know a lot of the words and verb tenses being used but I was absolutely able to follow the story with what I did know. I did cheat and looked up a lot of stuff. The story held my interest and I looked forward to seeing what would happen.

I have been studying Spanish with Duolingo for over four years. I have enjoyed it but had thought I hadn't made much progress. When I started reading this book I couldn't believe how well I was able to follow the story. It has given my confidence a huge boost. Apart from that, the story itself was really enjoyable and I found myself reading it as if it were on English. Highly recommended!

Excelente livro

I was very happy with the layout of this book. The chapters/conversations are short with a small glossary immediately following the chapter. This makes it easier to find the unknown word in the dialogue and review/revise the sentence. Short chapters also make the most of your time without feeling like you need to commit to reading for 30 minutes at a time; you can read a chapter or two while you're waiting in line. The story is entertaining and easy to follow with the level of Spanish being challenging but not impossible.
