A Great Addition to the series
I have read several "editions" of "What Color..." over the years, as I thought about what I wanted to do next with my life. Now that I have the time to do what I want, this is an excellent book to find out with! Bolles and Nelson switch roles for this one; and it works out great. But, BE WARNED... like "What Color..." is not a typical jobhunting book, this "version" is NOT a typical retirement planning volume, either. If, on the other hand, you're tired of the information overload that is living in our times, and want to discover what you REALLY want to do now: I highly recommend this book. It sure is helping me "re-invent myself".

Incredible Big Picture Inspiration!
I've read a lot of books on finance and retirement planning. Many were good on specifics and details, but this is the best I've ever read at covering all of the essentials of living well. It's a holistic view of creating a life plan that will allow every aspect of your life to thrive, not just your finances or your health. It is filled with very useful exercises that engage you in the process. Well worth the read and time!

A good starting point for retirement planning
A good starting point for retirement planning with references to many other resources. It covers a broad variety of topics that are important to consider, but leaves priority setting to the reader. I was expecting more depth on taking the results from determining my values and strengths and turning that into plans for activities and lifestyle choices, similar to the original book on career planning. But I still recommend this book to those who are getting started in the process of thinking about retirement.

The concept is getting tiresome
The "What Color is Your Parachute" series, perhaps like the Harry Potter series, has come to a somewhat dark ending as the authors contemplate retirement and how to make it enjoyable, along with about 10 zillion other authors, most of whom give the same tired advice, just with different wording. There are better books on the financial side of retiring-too many, for my taste; also, there are books more dedicated to the non-financial aspects of retirement, or "how not to drive yourself and your spouse crazy because you're bored as heck during retirement". You might want to play a variation of "Where's Waldo" and see if you can find a retirement book that DOESN'T say, "develop a hobby before you retire".My suggestion would be to think out which of these rather large topic areas you think will be more important to you and find a book dedicated to that topic. This volume of colorful parachutes is very generic, and well, sort of boring. You might want to look elsewhere.

Made me look at the whole picture
I am so much better prepared to retire after reading this book because it made me consider things I had not even thought were so important. Turns out that the money is really not the main thing at all! I now feel confident about retirement and am actually excitedly looking forward to it! We are going to purchase a fifth wheel and travel up and down Vancouver Island to visit our kids and grandkids for 6 months of the year (spring-fall), then travel to one of the top ten best retirement destinations in the world (according to International Living - safe, good health care and low cost of living) where we can live extremely comfortably for less than $1500 per month and enjoy a different culture every year! Understanding what is important to us so we see our family and also are stimulated to enjoy some adventure we now realize is extremely important. This book also motivated us to exercise more every day so we can enjoy more fully the years ahead. First retirement year (2014) we are going to Ecuador/Peru/Chile, the next year probably Thailand/Malaysia/Bali. We will plan each year's adventure away while we are home with our kids and they are telling us will probably come vacation wherever we are! This book took away my fear of retirement boredom and being broke, to now being really excited about the whole process. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Thought-provoking and challenging
I have read and used the non-retirement versions of this book and found them to be useful for exploring career options. The book for retirement focuses on planning and recognizing your values to create a process for the next phase of life. The authors emphasize the New Retirement; people are not worn out but burned out by their jobs. The book includes discussions about health and financial matters, but for me the best parts were the exercises to identify and prioritize personal values. I read the entire book, and am now going back to complete the various assignments. I knew I was getting something out of the book when I started to feel challenged about my decisions and actions. As the title of the review says, there is much material included that is thought-provoking.

not worth the time or money
i have read several retirement books recently and this ranks at or near the bottom. i need to know facts and insites as to the retirement preparation. this book had very little to none on this. it was full of philosophical and psychological discussions and tests to see if you are "ready" to retire. most know if they are psychologically ready to retire and don't need a book to decide. don't waste your money on this book.

Semplice e necessario

Holistic retirement guide
Bought this for my mom who is retiring this year. She read it and has found it very helpful in planning for more than just the financial side of retirement.

What do you want to do now you have a chance to do it?
The book is full of great suggestions and ideas, and some good points I had not even thought about. An excellent partner to the equally good main book "What Color is Your Parachute".
