## Description

How do you remember things? President Abraham Lincoln used a special trick -- he placed reminders under his top hat! Read all about it and more in this leveled reader perfect for President's Day and for anyone looking to discover fun facts about one of our nation's greatest presidents! This Step 3 History Reader shares some fascinating anecdotes about Abraham Lincoln, one of our greatest presidents. Abe started out in life as an absent-minded frontier lawyer. How did he nudge his memory? He stuck letters, court notes, contracts, and even his checkbook in his trademark top hat. When he took off his hat, it was all there! Young readers will be utterly engaged with how Abe's humanity comes across in this accessible, easy-to-read book. Step 3 Readers feature engaging characters in easy-to-follow plots about popular topics. These books are for children who are ready to read on their own.

Review: Excellent book. Grandchildren loved it - The Step into Reading books are well written and properly leveled for specific grades. Others try to do this, but often miss the mark. The story was engaging, the history was accurate, and my Grandchildren loved this book.
Review: An excellent resource for intermediate readers - Since my Kindergartener (age five-and-a-half) had completed the Step 2 books in the Step Into Reading series of books, I decided to go ahead and purchase the Step 3 books. I was a bit hesitant because I noticed there is quite a big leap between the Step 2 and Step 3 books, especially in terms of vocabulary and sentence structure. The vocabulary is more advanced with higher order words, and the sentences are longer. I was also concerned that my daughter might not like the topics which seemed to be more 'academic' with history-based stories. My worries were unfounded. She loves the books and is reading them with very little help from me. These books are excellent for building children's reading skills as well as increasing their confidence. Once you've completed the Step 1 and Step 2 books (I would advise proceeding level by level), the Step 3 books are not as daunting as they might first appear. In "Abe Lincoln's Hat", young readers are introduced to our 16th President. There is a lot of background information provided which makes for interesting reading, and it is pitched appropriately for young readers so as not to overwhelm them. The fact that Abe used his tall black hat to keep papers in is an interesting anecdote that had my little one giggling. I can't recommend these books highly enough - they are great for building reading skills, and also educational. This book is a great introduction to history, and I also came up with a series of short comprehension questions based on the story in this book so as to hone my daughter's comprehension skills (e.g. "Where did Abe live?", "What did Abe do with his hat?", "Describe the kind of person Abe was?").

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ New Salem Inspired
*by S***R on July 27, 2019*

My husband and I visited New Salem Village in Illinois and purchased a Lincoln top hat for our 8 year old grandson. I remembered my children having a book about Mr. Lincoln's Hat and thought it would make a perfect purchase to go with the hat. I found it on Amazon and it was a big hit! The book was just the right level for him and of course, he had to wear the hat while reading. He took both to show and tell and the whole class got to enjoy both. The Step into Reading company writes interesting, fun and challenging books for young readers. I am looking to them for one of his Christmas gifts.
