If you can fix it, it's well worth the effort
Did we really need a new Dyson just yet? The answer was surprisingly... no!After hearing some unusual [but ominous] noises from our DC14 last year, I realised it was terminal. Something had to be done, and at the time, a costly replacement model looked the more likely course of action. But during the process, this recommendation popped up. Admittedly, I still took a bit of a risk here, particularly because I only have a limited degree of technical ability (well, some days you can inexplicably take leave of your senses!). However, it's proved to be a worthwhile experiment, and very empowering too. Luckily, I saw earlier reviews which highlighted the possibility of using YouTube to find an instructional video to help in the process. This gave me the impetuous to give it a try. And so, armed with little more than a large screw driver and a hammer, I took the plunge. BUT... BE WARNED, it has proved a little more difficult to install than my confidence had allowed for [watch out for that elusive screw; and then later - the slightly fiddly process of replacing, then properly re-seating, the motor in it's inner housing]. Despite these hiccups, YouTube took me through most of the process and was straight forward enough to follow [many, many thanks for recommendations and the uploaded instructional videos]. At the same time, as had been suggested, I replaced both air filters - although the thinner exhaust filter was glued on (which suggested it wasn't really designed for removal), and therefore created a little difficulty in re-attaching the new one. However, by struggling through the whole process it has made a new machine of it. In fact, I just hadn't realised how much power had been lost over the years!Upon reflection: it is just possible that I only required a new set of brushes for the motor, coupled with the main [and easier to replace] air filter. However, when compared with the cost of a full replacement, it didn't really matter. So far, this replacement motor has lasted just over a year. So if you are looking for a little bit of a DIY challenge - with the omnipresent possibility (if it gets a bit messy) of still buying a replacement model - search for: 'How to replace and fit a Dyson motor' on YouTube. It could save you a bit of money.Note: Maybe I should have docked a star due to the technical challenge, but felt this was unjustified considering the product itself has exceeded all expectations.-------------UPDATE: a further two years down the line (three overall) and its still going strong!

Dyson DC33 Animal - Works Perfectly
This is the first time I've left feedback but hopefully it might help. After seeing sparks and flames (and a lot of black carbon) come out of the motor housing of our Dyson DC33, I figured the motor was finished!! A short time on Google confirmed this, although it could be worth trying a new set of brushes in the motor first as this is a cheap fix. As I'd seen flames coming from the motor I decided the cheap fix would most likely fail and needing to get the Dyson operational ASAP (the wife was looking up new ones!!) I went with the new motor option.I couldn't find a motor specifically for the DC33 but the ydk yv-2200 seems to be universally installed across many of the models. I found one site that said the ydk yv-2201 or ydk yv-2202 was installed in the DC33 although there is nothing on the motor with this reference. There was a reference number on the side which wasn't found on Google although there was some very close results just the last 2 digits were different. So in the absence of a direct match I decided to try this one and so far couldn't be happier. The motor and new HEPA filter (ordered at the same time) arrived on Sat morning special delivery despite the snow! Got home at 4pm and gathered the Dyson pieces ready to attempt the rebuild. Less than 1 hour later the DC33 was restored to full working order. The motor fitted perfectly and looks just like the original, all the identifying features are the same and unless otherwise advised I'd have said it was a Dyson part as there was no quality differences detectable.I couldn't find any YouTube or Google instructions for the DC33 strip down or rebuild but after watching a few videos of similar models it was fairly straight forward to work your way through the disassembly and rebuild.

Very pleased - my Dyson DC14 all floors vacuum cleaner is up and running again
My motor burnt out producing smoke and a an acrid smell. I checked the drive belt to the brush and it seemed OK and there were no blockages so ordered the Universal motor after reading the reviews. I also ordered new filters at the same time to do a more complete job. The motor replacement is a bit fiddly but the Youtube videos are a really useful guide especially for removing the brush drive belt and other parts to gain access to the motor. I had to order an extra long (at least 100 mm long) 15 mm Torx screwdriver for undoing the recessed screws holding the motor body and clutch cover. The motor was quite a tight fit into the motor housing and required persistance to dislodge it from the housing - I had to hit the motor shaft firmly with a piece of hard wood several times before it started to move! Fitting the replacement motor into the motor housign is made easier by putting a small amount of washing up liquid around the large rubber seal and around the entrance where the seal fits. The whole job took me a few hours to do once I had the parts and screwdriver. The vacuum cleaner now sounds and works almost as new. The motor seeems well made so should last and if it doesn't I'll update my review. I would recommend buying this motor as a replacement for the Dyson DC14 all floors vacuum cleaner.

so I was very pleased by the speed of despatch
My Dyson DC14 started to give off a burning smell and it turned out to be the motor had burnt out. After a quick search I found this motor at a price (around £15) that I thought was 'well worth a try'I ordered on Saturday and went for standard 1st class delivery at £3.30, fully expecting delivery around Wednesday or Thursday. To my surprise it turned up on Monday morning, so I was very pleased by the speed of despatch. The motor look pretty much identical to the original and fits perfectly, although fitting is a bit of pain, due to Dyson's design. My Dyson is now working perfectly, hopefully for many years to come.It is recommended that you have a long Tork screw driver for the screws, but I found just the right sized straight blade fitted across two of the 'points' and managed just fine.
