Relational Rod Trays are designed to be used with Cuisenaire-style Rods. The trays support the development of number sense through the exploration of mathematical concepts such as relationships between numbers, composing and decomposing numbers, working with patterns, additive reasoning, square numbers, properties of odd/even numbers, fractions, measuring, symmetry, and many more! Trays are clear, numberless, and come with “Hundreds Chart Cards” to attach under them (e.g., blank/customizable hundreds charts, top-down hundreds charts, and bottom-up hundreds charts). Relational rods are intended to be used relationally, not given a set quantity. As such, having cards to place under the tray allows the educator to use the trays how they feel fit. For example, in younger grades, perhaps the exploration goes towards assigning 1 to the white rod and therefore the numbered hundreds charts become useful. Alternatively, perhaps an upper years educator wants to use them for Fraction Talks and therefore the blank hundreds charts are useful. There are 3 types of Hundreds Chart Cards included; blank/customizable, top-down hundreds charts, and bottom-up hundreds charts. Top-down hundreds charts are transitional, but current research shows that bottom-up hundreds charts are effective and intuitive (Bay-Williams & Fletcher, 2007). Cards can be attached to the back of the trays by slipping them under 4 clips.
