Love this printer!!
I've had this machine for one week today:This machine did take its time to get set up. It took us about two hours to get the whole thing set up, wireless and all. The wireless was definitely the hardest part. It all depends on your router and the ports it has open, you have to play with your settings for your router. After we finally got it set up, it connected to the computer effortlessly and we could print/scan/copy right away. A previous review said you had to have it plugged in to scan, this is not the case. It does scan without a wire which is a great convenience and one less cord in the way.Another review said that printing from Photoshop was awful. I actually found Photoshop to work better than the canon software. For what I was printing the pictures for, they had to be all different sizes and once I scanned them in at 600 dpi, cropped them, and moved them to the page I wanted (which was also at 600 dpi) they came out crisp, clean and vibrant. The canon software was not able to size them the way I wanted, only standard printing was allowed from their software (that I could find, if I'm wrong, please let me know!!) I had to download a driver for Photoshop to scan, but after that, it printed from the 2nd tray and was able to do everything I wanted.Ink:I printed four, 8.5x11 sheets of full color and the only ink that went down one notch was the gray. The rest of the colors are still full. They are very tiny ink cartridges so high consumption is expected. I bought backups right away when I bought the printer and will have them if I need them. The printer/scanner does take a little bit of time to warm up when you are printing. It does make a few noises (they are not that loud) and sounds like its checking the ink, but that's about it. It takes maybe, at most, 1 minute or so to print one page.Overall, I am VERY happy with this printer. Its beautiful, well built (the plastic drawer for the paper doesn't bother me, I won't be using it that often), and does everything I need it to do wonderfully.

Didn't realize how far printers have come.... Very pleased!
Every couple years when my printer croaks I end up getting a replacement and I've never had my socks blown off by any model. But this Canon is Awesome!!!!!! I love it. It's such a great printer. When you print something it takes a few seconds to prep, but then it flies. It can print black and white in mere seconds. It prints my photos in no time at all. An 8x10 photo takes about 20 seconds. I'm sure that time varies depending on the photo but I can print a couple full size photos in under a minute. Wow am I impressed with the color quality too. Great looking photos. My recommendation is to use the Canon Photo Paper with this printer. Certain papers work better with certain brands of printers, and even though it may be a little bit more money, it will assure you long lasting quality photos. The Canon paper I use is the Canon Glossy Plus II and is guaranteed not to fade for 20 years. I personally think the pictures turn out better than at Wal-Mart or CVS. The colors are much more brilliant and glossy. If you purchase paper in bulk it is much cheaper here on Amazon. The printer setup took a little longer than other printers I've used in the past. I had to do the initial printer setup and ink cartridge alignment. That took about 15 minutes. Then I had to install the software on all my computers, which took about 10 minutes per computer. Finally I hooked them all up to the network, which was surprisingly easy and the printer software did just about everything for me. The complete process took less than an hour but its so easy now. The printer is full featured and the scanner quality is superior to anything I've used in the past. This is the best all around photo printer I've used, with the exception of pro quality printers that cost 5 times the price. (we use these at work). For the money you can't beat it. Easy to use and magnificent print quality. Highly recommended! You will be glad you made this purchase!

Scanning over wireless abysmally slow, but can use USB as workaround
I bought this printer to replace my aging Pixma MP 500, which I liked so much that I never even considered getting another brand this time around. Overall, it's an excellent all-in-one, with just one issue: Printing over WiFi works great, but scanning a full platen color 400 dpi wirelessly via computer control (I like having the extra driver control scanning from PC affords) would take forever as the machine kept stopping, presumably to transfer data. (This was with the printer wirelessly connected to router and router wirelessly connected to PC. My router is not slow either; it's a DLink DIR-655.) Scanning from the printer itself to a memory card was a lot faster. I had hoped to be able to scan wirelessly from my tablet PC, which had previously been a messy operation with lots of rearrangement of cables.I finally did figure out a workaround for preserving wireless scan capability while allowing USB connection for those giant color scans: Install the printer and drivers as instructed for wireless connection. Then, hook up the printer to the PC with a USB cable. Windows 7 automatically detects the printer on USB and installs the drivers automatically. Now, when you want to scan in ScanGear, go to preferences and you will be able to choose between the wireless driver and the USB driver. So now I print wirelessly, but when I want to scan something big, I walk over to the printer with my tablet, hook up the cable, and scan from there. Now to general impressions and comparisons:Compared to the MP500, here are pros and cons I've noticed:Pros:-much faster printing-machine interface is less clunky-8120 has CCD scanner vs CIS, good for scanning books-Wireless printing works flawlessly-Slightly more attention paid to color management settings-Sheetfeed and cassette are easier to use-front door opens automatically when printing. If only it would close automatically, too...Cons:-Driver interface now more confusing to set up defaults for since there are separate defaults for every type of paper-ink tanks are now 9 ml instead of 13-no more clear ink tanks! Now you have to believe the machine instead of seeing for yourself that the ink is really completely gone. Does Canon have something to hide?-Display and buttons are on top of lid, making them inaccessible when scanning thick books-No paper manual. Now you have to print your own. I miss having the thick booklet.Overall, this is a really nice machine to use and stunningly beautiful, too. I would have kept the clear ink tanks and improved the wireless scanning performance, or at least documented it more fully. While the manual does have a troubleshooting section for "scanning is slow," it gives no information about limitations of wireless data transfer; it simply recommends the non-fix of lowering the resolution.) However, being able to use the USB option takes care of my needs, and the issues I consider backwards steps are pretty trivial ones.
