Echo &The Bunnymen had a run of albums and non-LP singles between 1979 and 1987 that secured their place as one of the greatest UK bands of the post-punk era. But please do not hesitate to purchase this product if only for the fabulous packaging by designer Phil Smee: A three panel gate-fold with two discs and a 16-page booklet. This is definitely the best package design for a Bunnymen CD (save, perhaps, the spectacular "Crystal Days" 4-disc box-set). A stunning photo of the band is on the front cover. Both discs are stenciled with two versions of the band in silhouette that's become sort of a trademark for them on T-shirts and other merchandise. Very cool looking discs. There is no space on the CD package left without some design. When you open up the three panel gatefold and remove both discs you'll see a beautiful collage of photos of the band's classic picture sleeves from their many single releases. Looking at these sleeves triggered fond memories of playing my 45's and 12" records before CDs were available. Love that they included the picture sleeve of "The Back of Love" - always found that one a bit bizarre and kind of spooky. The song selections are strong and take the listener in chronological order from the first album "Crocodiles" (1980) to the last album to feature Pete de Freitas, their fifth release simply titled "Echo and the Bunnymen" (1987). These are the five core albums of the Bunnyman cannon (excluding the "best of" album called "Songs to Learn and Sing"). You literally get the best tracks from each album on this smart complication (although "My White Devil" is surprisingly not included in the "Porcupine" selections). Nevertheless, I was amazed by how many songs from each album they were able to fit onto both discs - not a minute of audio space is wasted, making this compilation a super value. In addition to these great album tracks, I was very pleased to find "The Puppet" included. This is my favorite EATB song and was an early single release that captures the essence of their unique sound at its brooding best. It certainly belongs in any compilation highlighting the Bunnymen's classic era. Ditto for "Never Stop" (12" version) - another classic single with great orchestration. Again, I know most of you own all these songs, but trust me, not only is the packaging alone worth the price, it really is enjoyable listening to all your favorite songs from the five core albums presented in chronological order. Review: Rhino gets it right! - Another great anthology by Rhino, Man! they get it right. I was really excited back in early 2000's when the Echo catalog was remastered. I had a few of their original LPs and CDs and thought they could use a sonic upgrade. But even though the albums all had great bonus b-sides and live tracks, I thought the re-mastering was too loud and compressed. I have posted several reviews on what I call the modern day destroying of music by over compression "The Loudness Wars" as it's called... So, looking at this, I wondered; it's got a bunch of my favorite songs...but how's it going to sound? Honestly, reading another reviewer saying they thought it sounded terrible, and the 2003 remasters sounded better made me think, well maybe it would sound better to my ears? It does! It's definitely louder than my old albums, but it still has some breathing room, the mixes are still punchy. I always say, if you want louder, turn up the volume knob! I recommend doing that with this CD and listening to it on a good system with some nice speakers or headphones! Anyway, all the tracks are great, I would've liked the alternate version of The Cutter and b-side Fuel from the 2003 Porcupine CD, or My Kingdom from Ocean Rain to be included...but oh well...we can't have it all! It has pretty much everything that one might expect, and a few extras. Not sure why a couple have complained about the sound quality...perhaps they're used to albums being compressed into LOUD but sonic mush with limited dynamics. Not sure, don't really care. LOL All I know is that I'm happy with this purchase and everyone that has had a chance to listen has also been pleased.
