Marvelous story. Very uplifting spiritually even though it is fiction.

One of the BEST...
Short stories I've ever read.. beautifully descriptive prose and a narrative that moves me to tears... EVERY TIME I read it, which is usually once a year on Christmas Eve. This story is part of a beautiful tradition in our family that I hope will be transmitted to the next generation. 5 stars isn't enough!

A lovely holiday story to share with the family
Although not a new story, this one is quite fascinating. The historic perspective is interesting to know.

Wonderful
I liked the premise the story presents that in spite of everything he succeeds. There was nothing I disliked. I would recommend it to all Christians who feel they are not attaining their goals for God when, in fact, they are.

Love the books
I love the books--I ordered 10 but only received 9. Please send the 10th book. I do not want to return them at all.

-- In Search of an Ancient Prophecy--
The Three Kings, Wise Men and Magi are all names given to the first men to see and recognize Jesus. Little is known of their lives except for what we've read in the Bible. Over the years, many stories have been written concerning the Magi, but I feel that this is the most beautiful of them all. This poignant fable concerns Artaban who was a member of the ancient priesthood of the Magi. He had been watching the heavens and had seen the signs that it was the time for an old prophecy to be fulfilled. "There shall come a star out of Jacob, and a scepter shall arise out of Israel."Artaban sold his house and all that he owned and purchased three beautiful jewels to be given to the new King of Israel. The gifts were a beautiful blue sapphire which was like a piece of the night sky; a ruby that was even more red than a sunrise; and a pearl as pure as the peak of a snow mountain. Artaban was to meet and travel with three other members of the ancient priesthood, Balthazar, Caspar and Melchoir, so they could follow the new star of Israel together. On his way to meet with his friends, he stops to help a dying man and is never able to catch up with the other Magi. Artaban spends his life helping others, but always seeking Jesus. The beautiful ending is worth waiting for. A very inspirational story!

A Lovely Inspirational Story
The Story of the Other Wise Man by Henry van Dyke is a moving extension of the beloved Christmas story. It was read to me and my sister each year at the season of Epiphany by my father, Ted Schuyler. Years later, I also read it to my own children, but eventually our much-loved copy was lost. My children grew up, and although I occasionally thought of the story, I didn't revisit it. Then during a scripture study at my church, a discussion of the Magi led me to recall this story. Since I wanted to share it with some of my friends, but no longer had a copy available, I went to Amazon. Again, the magic worked. There were numerous options available, including several used paperback versions that I could purchase. I bought two, one to share with local friends, and one to mail to author Kittredge Cherry, whose wonderful "Jesus in Love" novels are a major part of my current spiritual reading, and which I have reviewed for Amazon. Amazingly, Kitt had not previously encountered this delightful story. Again, thanks to Amazon for being such a wonderful resource of classics!

A lovely myth
I had a recollection of reading a story like this many years ago. This book seems to be the source of all subsequent versions of the story. I'm still searching for the one I read previously. This book, written so long ago, does not have the modern idea of a hook at the beginning, so it reads a little slowly to start with. Numbers of Zoroastrians meeting and conferring - but stick with it. It's not a long read but the story it tells is essentially the one I remember.

Don't buy this version
The story itself is a classic, but this edition is not good. It looks as though someone has scanned the original book and converted it into text via computer, and not even bothered to proof read it. It is full of typo errors, odd spacing and hyphens, and numbers in strange places (which I presume were the original page numbers). This is so unnecessary and very sloppy and disappointing. Buy the book by all means, but not this version.

A great story - timeless.
A classic for young and old, it embodies the Golden Rule. The bible never says how many wise men there were or how many of each gift there were; nor does the bible say from which country or district they came.Henry van Dyke had a great dream.

The Other Wise Man
This book is a beautiful and moving tale told in beautiful language. I was delighted by my purchase and the condition of the copy I received was excellent and delivery time also excellent which is typical of Amazon.

Good service from supplier
Bewitching story of the fourth Wise Man, who unlike the three original Wise Men, got left behind at the beginning and spent his whole life searching for the Messiah.
