Are these required when changing the filter? What is it's purpose?

This is the black carbon filter that comes attached to the HEPA filters you buy. It is what collects a lot of physical dust and things and keeps the HEPA filter (which is much more expensive) lasting longer. I can usually change this carbon filter out twice for every HEPA filter change out.

how do you install these do you attach to the orginal filter via the velcrow?

Do I put it in the front or back of the filter holder? I read it can be done either way. Had it in the back, then front. My fish aquarium back and the fish are healthy.

Do you have to buy these as well as the hepa filters or will the hepa filters alone be sufficient?

I use both. I change these pre-filters every month, which I find to extend the life of the hepa filters. There are smokers in my house, I run my unit 24 x 7, and when I change the pre-filters I was amazed at how filthy they were. Hope this helps answer your question...

Removed old filter. Light is still flashing red after new filter replacement. Anyone else having this issue??

On the top of my GermGuardian it says to hold the UV light button for 5 seconds to reset the filter light.
