Blown away...
You see wind turbines all around the countryside in our area so giving the kids in the family a chance to make their own and explain what they do and how they work seemed like a great idea and this Wind Power kit from Science 4 You is mostly successful. It will help if your kids are a bit LEGO-crazy because the construction method and included instruction manual are very like modern LEGO kits. The instructions aren't as clear as LEGO's tend to be and although they take you through the process step by step the illustrations are very small and occasionally tricky to decipher. There's a special pliers-like tool supplied to push the fixing pins into their holes and you'll need to supply a screwdriver to get things properly fixed. Once assembled it's an impressively tall turbine and sits about a metre high but it's really not that steady on its small base and if you're really going to put it out in the wind you'll need to secure the base with a couple of bricks or other heavy items. The booklet also suggests a couple of experiments to conduct and does (eventually) mention how to engage and disengage different gears in the head of the turbine, but it would be better if this was explained nearer the beginning. Changing gears does of course make it more or less efficient but changes the resistance that the wind has to overcome, an interesting lesson to learn. You also can adjust the angle of the blades making them more or less resistant to the wind and changing the way it all works. With a successfully spinning turbine you get to light an inbuilt LED or recharge a AA battery (the charger is supplied but the battery isn't) so you can see the end result of all your (and the wind's) efforts.I suspect a lot of kids will want a bit of help with the construction but it's still a fun thing to put together and there are worthwhile concepts and phenomenon worth discovering by doing it. It might not sustain much interest beyond the construction but it's an engaging way to occupy an enquiring young mind for a while.

It’s a Bday present but I know my daughter will love it.

Disappointing
It says there are 15 experiments, not true. There are only 7. The item does not have a wind vane to turn the turbine into the wind. Very disappointing

The dearer the kit, less fun provided. 😕
Having 4 children all at different schools and with this Covid - 19 going around I have had a lot of company over these past weeks as they have all been self isolating due to the schools being closed - thank god you only need to self isolate for 10 days now !Getting my older ones to actually do school work has been a nightmare so these Science kits have been a life saver, we have had the chance to try so many different ones. This is the Wind power set with a retail price of just under £40.00 which is quite expensive compared to others in this brand. My oldest ones loved all the sets we had so far but this set just didn’t keep them interested long enough to get any where so is still left unfinished in the box.It would seem the higher price ones are just not doing it for my children - I don’t know if the reason being them having learning difficulties? ?The instructions were very confusing you just didn’t know if you were coming or going, diagrams were small so couldn’t see what bits went where, using different names to what they are actually called a real let down as past kits contained Excellent instructions.A lot of adult supervision needed and to be fair after a while I even got board and decided a needed a cuppa.

Educational
Think hard before buying parents, when I first looked at this I thought this looks fun with the bonus of being educational, the instructions at first glance looked easy enough so I thought my 9 year old Granddaughter who loves making things would love it, well she did but there is a good chance you will end up building most of it as I did, the problem is that the easy to assemble in pictures can get a bit confusing for young brains, identifying the bits and following the lines to where they go and what order, for instance the axle looks easy enough but you have to put one cog on before you put it in the frame and fit the others, and you need to fit them the right way round, she managed to get confused just making the frame, that's the point when she asked me, a seasoned professional at building flat pack furniture, I must admit I was getting confused, but in the end we did it, she built parts of the frame and the rotor and I did the rest and it worked, it's not hard to clip together and can be taken apart quite easy, some plastic tools are included one to pop out the red studs, which if you look have a flat on each side where one of the tools slips in and helps pull the stud out, the other is a plastic set of pliers which help push them in, when fitting some parts like the axels it is easy to push sections out that you have just fitted which is a pain. So beware if your child might need help building this so it might not just be them that's getting educated, there are a few experiments to be carried out once it's built so it will keep them amused for a while, my Granddaughters interest waned once it was built and went off do do something else, so I think that's going to be it, it was me standing in the garden trying to catch the wind with not much luck.
