For those who enjoy mythology and fantastic tales this book is for you. Plenty of fights and battles between supernatural warriors. However the story revolves around the Monkey's personal journey, first to gain the knowledge to become powerful and inmortal, then his naughty adventures as an inmortal disrupting heaven, earth and hell and finally to redeem himself by helping Monk Xuanzang from China get the Buddhist sacred scriptures from the remote West (India). This book is like a Kung Fu flick from the Tang dinasty and it's a delightful first step to study the chinese literary tradition.

Well written. Well translated. This book is a must! The monkey kings stories show you some insight on everyday battles that we all face. Maybe not in the form of a monkey or demons flying around. But to take a step back and rethink how you would normally do things.

Received as described and quickly but I should have done more research because this is not my cup of tea.

How fortunate for Hsuan-tsang, the priest traveling to the West to secure authentic Buddhist scriptures from India to carry back to China, that he encountered Monkey, and Pigsy, and Sandy, who helped him and guarded him throughout his arduous journey. Read and enjoy this enchanting and celebrated folk tale from China.

Yet, as a story, you cover the whole journey and you get to discover all the characters. If you want a first contact with Chinese culture in terms of literature, go for this one. The "full" version is almost 1000 pages bigger.Read both, I prefer this one.

The book is a nice summary of the rise and fall of the monkey king. IT is great for all those, who cannot be bothered reading the big novels. But, I have to admit, I found it very short. There were time when I was wondering, why has this been shortened, and why has this event been excluded altogether?However, for a summary book, this version is very good. I enjoyed the funny side of Wukong very much, the terribleness of the Pig and the seriousness of the Master. Something that was really great was to read about their loyalty to each other.The translations were really great, but at times there were a few typos. However, the storytelling is great, I read through the book in two days. It made me want to continue reading, to see how each quest ended.I can truly recommend this book to anyone who is somewhat interested in the story of the Xuanzang's journey to the west. It has everything a good book needs, humour, seriousness, action and a deeper meaning. :-)

Etwas sperrig trotz schon erfolgter Kürzungen der Originalgeschichte. Viele Kampfesschilderungen, die mich persönlich eher langweilen, aber dies ist nunmal ein Teil der Geschichte und der Übersetzer hat sie schon gekürzt. Darüber bleibt die Botschaft, dass wir die einzelnen Protagonisten, allen voran den Affen allegorisch in uns haben und die beschriebenen Kämpfe sinnbildlich in uns selber statt finden, manchmal schwer zu greifen. TRotzdem eine gute Möglichkeit, sich dieser in China jedem Kind bekannten Geschichte anzunähern und sie kennen zu lernen.
