Can a 14500 battery be used instead of a AA battery?

No. It is designed to work with AA batteries. You get very good runtimes with good rechargeable NIMH batteries such as the eneloops. This is an excellent EDC flashlight with versatile modes and a very powerful high mode when it is required.
