I wound up giving it to my son in the Marines before he went to Afghanistan so I was in the market for another. This one is a great addition to my collection. It is a good quality item and seems like it will last plus it is made in Russia. The emblem on the front can be removed if you don't care for it as it is attached by four thin brass wires poked through the front and then spread out against the backside of that face. It is not heavy but a little bulky as compared to a standard watch cap but that is to be expected. It is also very warm and has two tie strings that hold the side flaps up and over the top that will allow you to pull the flaps down to keep your ears warm. Some balaclavas are warmer than others, from what I've experienced. But they pretty much are all designed to keep the face shielded from wind and varying degrees of cold, where as the ushanka is not meant for keeping the whole face warm. That said, this ushanka keeps the head and ears warm and cozy. The balaclava I have does not keep my ears and head as warm as my ushanka. Perhaps you could get an inexpensive, fitted balaclava AND a ushanka for a cold weather camping trip. A fitted balaclava would go under the ushanka if need be... **Q: What size would fit a 13 yr old?** A: Measure your head with a tape measure, and use the size table **Q: Do you have size M?** A: Sorry no medium at this time **Q: How do you put the pin in the hat?** A: I measured and found the center of the hat face and marked it with a small piece of masking tape. Then I got a sewing needle and made a small pin hole in the area of where I marked the center. I poked the hat pin needle into the pin hole, then carefully remove the needle and small piece of masking tape. I ordered the hat one size larger, as I wear a 7 1/2 which is a large, I ordered XL to be on the safe side. The hat fits perfectly, not too tight, nor loose. the hat came with the Soviet insignia already attached, this must be due to people having issues attaching them in the past. Well made and the tag says made in Russia. these hats are very warm. I purchased this because I'm a History buff and about as anti-communist as one can get...which is the joke of the hat and me wearing it... A nice note inside the hat from the seller thanking me and to contact him if there were any issues. There weren't...
