Wow all the negative reviews for one of the Best DVD/VHS
I have had this DVD/VHS around 16 months. Bought it around the First week of July 2008. This has lasted more than the other DVD/VHS from JVC, lasted around 3 to 4 months, mostly DVD's would not look great and would skip. The V9800 has been the best DVD/VHS Player I've had. Bought it cheap and new I bought it close to when I bought my Samsung TV. I like the Remote control on the V9800 because I don't need to worry about TV's Remote because I can turn on and off the TV and control the volume and channels, I use that feature a lot and don't have to worry about the other control until I need to use it. I'm surprised to see all this bad ratings for a good DVD/VHS, I use mine a lot and almost everyday and it keeps working great. This is my second Samsung DVD/VHS, the other one is the Samsung DVD-V9700 Tunerless 1080i Upconverting DVD VHS Combo Player and that one is 20 months old. Still works and being used on the downstairs TV. The Samsung DVD-V9800 Tunerless 1080p Upconverting VHS Combo DVD Player is being used at my room.Update::::Things other are saying is that they can't connect the vcr and dvd with the same cable, mostly for that is that VCR does not work with HDMI and VCR is a dead bread so they haven't updated it to support and it's something they don't want to waste more money on VCR's.I now have 2 and both working perfectly.

Gee, I don't remember this many 1-star ratings when I bought this thing
If a zero-star grade was available, I would have selected it. After reviewing the rest of the 1-star ratings, I have two thoughts:1. Allow me to add my voice to the chorus of negative reviews on the Samsung DVD-V9800. It has gone completely non functional after only 4 months at most of very light duty as a DVD player. I don't think I ever used the VCR function other than the one time when I initially tested the unit after installing it. I received the unit in August or September and it sat in a box while I pulled the rest of my home theater together. Of course, now in December, the failure occurred after the 90 days parts and labor warranty has expired and now I am faced with the choice of paying for labor. Ironically, the diagnosis fee will probably exceed the unit's purchase price. I cannot fault Amazon for not being responsive because I didn't even open the box for 30 days or more. Lesson learned: Be patient and don't order stuff until you're really ready to test it and use it.2. I simply do not remember the Samsung DVD-V9800 having this many negative ratings. I cannot imagine I would have bought anything with this many complaints against it. Anything will have some negative comments but in this case, the common theme of so many of the DVD-V9800's dying at a young age should be heeded by anyone considering one of these units. Lesson Learned #2: Pay attention to consumer level reviewsOddly enough, when we bought the unit, it was on sale, and my better half really wanted to keep the capability of playing VHS tapes despite their obsolescence, so we bought two of them. At least I won't have to go far for a spare. Hopefully, it may last longer than its predecessor, perhaps even long enough to re-establish some of the admiration I had for Samsung. To Samsung Management: Take these reviews with you on your next retreat, read them aloud amongst each other. Then ask yourselves if this where you really want to be, with this many consumers consistently criticizing one of your products. Either you will conclude that you are unhappy with the state of affairs . . . or you don't care.

Excellent in every way!!!
I purchased this for my Mom and kids that I care for, and I needed something with ease of operation, and this product is it!!The remote is very simple, and can control the TV, DVD, and VCR switching easily between each one. My mother is 78 years old, and she loves the quick record feature by just tapping the record button for how long you want to record for.For those that gave this product negative reviews, I believe it is because the unit is TUNERLESS. This means you have to have a Set Top Box (STB) ~ cable box, satellite box, etc. The unit does not have "channels" built into it. You also have to have an up to date TV or a converter box if you have an older TV with a coax. I made sure to research the product thoroughly before purchasing. The picture quality is AMAZING!! Using both the HDMI for DVD or the AV RCAs for VCR.You will not be disappointed with this machine!!! Just make sure you have your facts before purchasing.

Great Player at a Great Price!
I love this thing! A few months ago I moved and inherited a terrific new entertainment center. It looked great, but didn't have room for all of my then-current components. So, to save space I decided to toss out my VCR and DVD player, purchasing this single machine as their replacement. Now, I WAS skeptical: what kind of quality could I possibly get for ninety bucks? And, based on the other reviews there are a few buttons and whistles it doesn't have, but guess what? I don't need `em, and my guess is that most people don't. Having now owned this player for about three months, I can say that its performance has been flawless and it's done everything I've expected of it. If you're looking for high-end features, this ain't for you. If you want a machine that's relatively simple to operate and plays all your discs and video tapes, and comes to you at a bargain price, then this IS the one!
