## Description

Loaded with lyrics about nightmares, pain, isolation and broken relationships, One X , the sophomore effort from Three Days Grace should be a downright bummer of a ride. Instead, the listener manages to find uplift lurking beneath the weighty lyrics as the quartet churns out a series of anthemic, crunch-chord songs. The band moves from arena-ready light metal with "It's All Over" to the sex groove of "Animal I Have Become," before plunging the listener into full-on chaotic heaviness during the anti-alienation anthem "Riot" and easing us into the atmospheric future hit "Get Out Alive." Throughout, TDG remains true to its core alt-metal sound. While that sound has been called unimaginative and unoriginal and at times does feel a little too familiar, the material on One X is never less than convincing and it packs a serious and stinging rock ‘n' roll punch track after track. -- Jedd Beaudoin

Review: GREAT CD! - Love the album! One-X is one of Three Days Grace’s best works and everyone should give it a listen!
Review: "Anger and agony is better than misery" - "Animal I Have Become" has been playing over and over on the local hard rock station. Every time I heard it, I knew I had to have it so I wrote down as many lyrics I could and looked them up on the Internet and found Three Days Grace. I am glad I did! Awesome album from beginning to end! One of the best and most solid CDs I've gotten in the last ten years! It has been living in my CD player for months now and I still can't get enough. I definitely recommend it! The CD booklet opens up to reveal the dark artwork of social angst, a nice (but small) full color photo of the band, and lyrics. Here are the tracks: "It's All Over": Excellent, exploding opener with a beefy sound. Apparently about watching a friend destroy him/herself ("And it gets under my skin to see you giving in"). It's not the best track here, but is an appropriate, energetic song to open the album. "Pain": Slow verses with explosive chorus. A little repetitive with somewhat contrived lyrics "Pain! I like it rough `cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all"). I like the verses and the bridge. "Animal I Have Become": Love it! The reason I bought this CD. Clear and deliberate vocals with heavy guitar. Flat out kicks! Still my favorite. "Never Too Late": Beautiful acoustic guitar and blending vocals. A wonderful power ballad at the verses that explodes at the chorus. Inspirational lyrics that are serious but not sappy: "Even if I say / it will be all right / Still I hear you say / you want to end your life / Now and again we try / To just stay alive / Maybe we'll turn it around / Cause it's not too late / It's never too late." "On My Own": Another track that starts slow and then rocks! The part before the chorus that brings up the intensity is my favorite. Great vocals there. The chorus is a bit stilted. I also like the bridge to this track. "Riot": This style of music may not be the best to create an effective riot song, but they try. It is probably the heaviest track on the album. Still the chorus "Let's start a riot!" doesn't sound too convincing, but we probably wouldn't want it to be. The lyrics to the verses are better: "If you feel so empty / So used up, so let down / If you feel so angry / So ripped off, so stepped on / You're not the only one / Refusing to back down / You're not the only one / So get up" The driving guitar riff and brief solo almost sounds like old school metal. Some almost Ill Nino-esque screaming incorporated in this track, too. "Get Out Alive": Dark opening. A nice, slow track with an excellent bridge. The lyrics at the chorus bug me a little because it sounds like he's singing "If you want to get a life, run for your life," (uh, yeah); but he's actually singing "If you want to get out alive, run for your life" but it doesn't sound like it. "Let It Die": Very accessible, mainstream-sounding track. Nice, laid-back sound at the verses. I like the blunt lyrics about the fire extinguishing from a relationship: "I swear I never meant to let it die / I just don't care about you anymore." "Over and Over": Very memorable song. It is slower and accessible like "Let It Die." It also has some orchestration in the background. "Time of Dying": I like this track a lot. It has a very catchy, sing-along to chorus. "Gone Forever": This song is OK, it's not one of my favorites here. The lyrics are more memorable than the music. The chorus is not as good as the ones of other tracks on this album. "One X": This final track sums up the underlying theme of this CD: disappointment in where life has gotten one to. But this song gives a positive message that things might get better: "We are the ones / We get knocked down / We get back up / And stand above the crowd / We are one." The end of it: "We stand above the crowd" background, is a little sappy, though.
